Magpie Estate 'The Malcolm'

The 2012 Malcolm was made using fruit from six rows in a low yielding vineyard in the Western Ridge sub region of the Barossa Valley. The vines were cluster thinned for maximum flavour intensity and the fruit was left to hang longer than is typical for fruit used in other Magpie Estate wines. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 10 months in new American oak puncheons, and then racked into new French oak puncheons for the final
15 months of maturation. At blending we added the best barrel of the vintage from all our other Shiraz, and this has given thewine extra depth.
Very black in the glass. The nose offers up super ripe fruit aromas of black cherry, cassis and plum, alongside toasty mocha oak, meat, liquorice and spice. Rich and textured with a velvety palate. This is a rich and powerful, hedonistic Barossa Shiraz with great complexity and super-ripe tannins. The 2012 is in the vein of the slightly more elegant style of recent releases. This
is still very rich, and ripe Shiraz, and shows the depth of fruit and power of the 2012 vintage, but not in an over the top way.
Voluptuous and drinkable now, although the wine obviously has many years ahead of it. At a fairly recent vertical tasting going back to the 1994, all wines were still drinking, all apart from the 1994 were either in their prime or still young.
The Malcolm Shiraz is only released in the finest vintages to ensure the quality standard is maintained, and the reputation for capturing the true essence of Barossa Shiraz upheld. First since 2010, next release will be the 2017!
