Bodegas Menade 'Nosso'

Verdejo 'Natural', 2014

Spain White

Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon 75cl

A delicious 'natural' wine from Menade. A real find from my trip to Spain earlier in the year.
Although from Rueda- I don't think it is regarded as typical of the region hence it being labelled from Castilla y Lyon.
Brothers and sister Marco, Richard and Alejandra Sanz run this certified organic estate in Rueda, South of Valladolid. Hand-harvesting, use of dry ice instead of sulphur, natural yeasts and low yields are some of the techniques used to produce the trade-mark Menade style of pure and expressive wines.

100% Verdejo Certified organic, natural winemaking and no sulphur added.

Nosso comes from the vineyard Finca Menade, in Rueda, a plot with limestone clay and stony soils and a plenty of pebbles. Prevention treatments 100% natural are used, like herbal infusions and whey. The grapes are hand-picked and brought in the winery where they are rigorously sorted. The Indigenous yeasts starts the fermentation, and the wine undergo a malolactic fermentation, adding weight, poise and complexity to its existing expressive character. Zero sulphur is added. It's all handled quite oxidatively and very naturally.

Has an oxidative character on the nose, but not in a bad way. Quite autolytic and honeyed (fresh) with lime and pineapple fruit.
Really textured and almost creamy on the palate. Nutty and weighty with good acidity, lime and pineapple shining through. Crisp acidity on the finish leads to a long creamy almost butterscotch flavour, again oxidative characters but the whole is distinctive and quite delicious.
