Domaine Tournon

Shiraz, 2003

Australia Red

Mount Benson, Limestone Coast 75cl

Domaine Tournon is the Australian winery of Michel Chapoutier. This comes from Mount Benson on the Limestone Coast. It's an interesting savoury style, that does evoke the Rhone. It avoids the minty, unripe flavours that are often a feature of Limestone Coast wines, yet also it's not a sweet style. Spicy, peppery nose , it does have just a hint of green vegetal tones on the nose. It's meaty too and just maybe has a touch of brett about it??. It's full with berry fruit, spice and black pepper with gentle creamy oak. It's medium bodied and well crafted. A touch of smoky bacon too. Could esaily be Northern Rhone from a warmish vintage. Tannins are soft and although the finish is savoury it is appealing now and over the next 5 years. It's good but i would rather drink a decent Crozes Hermitage or St Joseph from 2003 personally.
