Tasca d'Almerita 'Tascante'
, 2009
Italy Red
Sicily 75cl
This is the second release of Tasca d'Almerita's wine from Etna, labeled Tasca with then the ent backwards, a clever play on words!!
Made with the regional speciality Nerello Mascalese, from vines planted in 1960 and aged 18 months in old oak.
It's a bit friendlier than many Etna wines, Nerello Mascalese is similar to Barolo, and some of the wines can be very herbal and tannic, pale in colour and quite hard work.
This still has similar traits to Barolo, pale colour though redder, herbs, meat, spice, flowers and red berry fruits.
It's got riper tannins and the time in oak seems to have tamed the wine. Still quite savoury with good structure, alongside the berry fruit and spice is hints of chocolate, herbs and a very gentle creaminess. It's a subtle elegant style and i really like it, good typical acidity and a long savoury finish. However at c£30 it's a lot of money. Interesting but i probably would not buy it!!
