Pinot Noir, 2010

New Zealand Red

Martinborough 75cl

This wine has had some amzing success winning not only the Champion Pinot Noir Trophy but also the Champion Open Red Wine Trophy at the influential Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2011, quite a feat given this is a 12.50 wine and beat all the Pinot Noir's entered including wines up to over three times the price. I was in Australia last week and picked up a bottle whist visiting a Sydney retailer with my Magpie Estate hat on, and was most impressed. I have tracked it down and am now tasting it properly (as opposed to just drinking!).
Pencarrow is the second label of Palliser Estate, this from their website.
"The 2010 season had a favorable weather pattern that produced a classical pinot noir. Martinborough Pinot Noir fruit given a cold soak and fermented to 14.0% alc., with some indigenous yeast employed, the wine aged 10 months in French oak."

Dense mulberry and raspberry on the nose with spice and some oak. It's full flavoured with lovely ripe raspberry, mulberry and even a hint of cranberry with integrtated oak and spice. Good acidity and ripe tannins make sure that this is a wine that will happily age for a few years, even though it is delicious now.
