Magpie Estate 'The Mixed Thing'

, 2010

Australia Red

Barossa Valley 75cl

Another brand new release from Magpie Estate. I have wanted to make a brighter, juicier, crunchier style of red for a couple of years. Rolf knows the vineyards and when we got the chance to buy the fruit from the Garwood vineyard we jumped at it. It's only a small lot but we now have access to some old vine Cinsault. We also buy fruit from the Research Station in Nuriootpa, especially some small lots; these are not worth making individual wines from so we ferment together, along with the Cinsault. So the blend is 25% Cinsault, 25% Cabernet Franc, 25% Sangiovese, 12.5% Tannat and 12.5% Dolcetto! Once the fermentation is down to about 4 beaumé we press the juice off the skins and the juice then finishes fermentation, off skins in older oak. This makes a wine with less tannin. The total was 4 barrels all neutral, older oak. The result is a young, bright wine, it's maybe deeper and richer than we expected, but that's 2010, a year that produced wines with great colour and intensity. Blackberry, cherry, strawberry and cranberry on the nose, big and juicy on the palate with lovely ripe tannins and good acidity keeping the wine fresh. Not heavy and with lovely sweet fruits making it really quite easy drinking, it's bright and lively and can take a light chill, a perfect barbecue red! Drink over the next 2-3 years.
