Cien y Pico 'Knights-Errant'

Garnacha Tintorera, 2007

Spain Red

Manchuela, La Mancha 75cl

Cien y Pico is our call to arms and means a ‘hundred or so’ in La Mancha, the southern Castilian meseta between the Mediterranean and Madrid, the land of Don Quixote. A wide, dry, plateau 1000 metres above sea level, surrounded by mountains that offer just enough protection from the icy winters that turn directly into hot summers.
Here ancient plantings of Tintorera not only survive, but thrive in the organically poor but limestone rich, red, sandy Miocene era sedimentary clay between the rocky limestone outcrops that cover the vineyards. These ancient, gnarled, free standing bush vines grown on their own roots with just 300mm of rain a year, yielding tiny but intense crops.
Made by the guys behind Dandelion Vineyards in Australia, Elena Golakova Brooks, Luis Jimenez Garcia, Nicola Tucci & Zar Brooks. These 100+ year old bush vines are an ancient variety- Tintorera, also known as Garnacha Tintorera. According to the respected Australian journalist Tim White Tintorera, or Tintorera Garnacha, is a red-fleshed and red-skinned black grape: a so-called teinturier. It is, in fact, a cross of Garnacha (grenache) and petit bouschet.
This is the top red of the two they make, aged 19 months in 85% new Radoux French barriques. Very low yielding and picked at perfect ripeness, great depth of colour, the 100+ year old vines giving loads of everything!! Rich meaty nose, roasted meats, chocolate, spice and toasty oak. It's grown and grown in the glass over the evening suggesting a long life. It's plush and rich with a huge core of plum and black cherry fruit, meaty and dense with black olive and pepper and toasty French oak. It's young but with air very appealing and worked really well with a well aged steak tonight. It's a cracking wine with vibrancy and freshness, richness and great balance. Definitely a larger scaled wine than the Doble Pasta, although for value that wins hands down, however for aging go the Knights Errant. Whatever two great wines from historic vineyards.
