I used to stock this wine 10+ years ago so on a recent family holiday in the Algarve i bought a bottle of the current release 2004. (had a 1998 in a restaurant which was pretty good a touch baked with liquorice and cedar). Now smartly packaged in a heavy bottle. As with many of the reds i tried it has a baked character that makes the wine taste a touch stewed and therefore quite hard work! Spicy and baked on the nose. Meaty and gamey too. It's a rich chewy red with lots of spice, red and black fruits with liquorice and some herbal notes. It's quite rich and full but ultimately as i have already said is just a little stewed. Not unpleasant but quite hard work. There are some great Portuguese reds out there but sadly this appears to be the prevelant style if you buy without inside knowledge!!
