Magpie Estate 'The Salvation'

Gewurztraminer, 2007

Australia White

Barossa Valley 75cl

Magpie Estate's first white wine (other than The Beak) for 10 years. This came about because Gewurztraminer-in a fresh non oily style is a wine that myself and Rolf love to drink. We loved the Penfolds Cellar Reserve Gewurztraminer 2005, so we decided to make one. A vineyard in the Northern Barossa-close to the Eden Valley came up. We quickly sought to buy the grapes. I gave Christa, Rolf's sister and his white winemaker the brief and she succeeded perfectly in a challenging vintage. Picked fairly ripe, gently pressed and cool fermented, bottled early with just a touch of residual sugar. It's a wonderfully fresh aromatic white that's crisp and tangy on the palate. Ginger and lychee with ripe citrus and jasmine on an appealing perfumed nose. It's fresh on the palate. Off-dry with tropical fruits, citrus, lychee and ginger on the palate. Crisp and fresh on the finish. It's lovely on it's own and works brilliantly with anything a touch spicy. Will get a touch richer with time in the bottle. I am biased but this is a delicious and different white wine. Drink now to 2010.
