Clos des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2019 Offer
2019 has come as a blessing to Clos des Papes. After the disasters of hail damage in 2017 followed by severe mildew pressure in 2018 (leading to tiny yields of 9hl/ha), it is brilliant to see that the new vintage is both extremely high in quality as well as generous in quantity. As ever, the fundamental work at this wonderful estate is firmly focused on getting things right in the vineyard, managing the synergy between the vines and the challenges that local weather can bring. Given that the vines here average over 50 years of age, they are firmly prepared and able to withstand many ordeals, including Mistral winds at 140km/hr and, in the case of 2019, a severe heatwave and drought conditions.
Vincent Avril is delighted by the 2019 wines at Clos des Papes, comparing his 2019 red wine with the great vintages of 2016 and 2010. It is extremely balanced: powerful, certainly, but characterised by finesse and silkiness. The yield was ‘normal’ for Clos des Papes, although this is clearly much lower than that which is authorised by the appellation. Vincent makes clear that the only word that matters to him is ‘qualité’ and stresses that Clos des Papes always exhibits 100% of what nature has given the vines.
The 2019 Clos des Papes Blanc exudes, according to Vincent, aromas of pear and grapefruit with hints of aniseed and white flowers. On the palate it has a mineral character and a freshness, which points to its potential to age, along with a mouth-watering salinity. Vincent suggests this would be a good accompaniment with fish, poultry, shellfish or lobster as well as certain cheeses.
