First release since 2010. As ever it’s a barrel selection of our best lots. Coming from 3 vineyards, 2 in Western Ridge and 1 barrel of Eden Valley Shiraz in the blend for complexity. Aged for c22 months in a combination of 300 litre Hogsheads and 475 Puncheons. The blend ended up being all new oak barrels 75% French, 25% American.
It’s a voluptuous rich Barossa Shiraz, dark berry and plum fruit with lots of spice, some plain chocolate and toasty mocha oak. Long and well balanced, made to age, but has a hedonistic appeal that will mean it drinks on release.

The latest Fakir! The first since 2012 and very different in style.
The Grenache largely comes from the Neldner vineyards in Gomersal, we added a portion from Rolf's Riedl vineyard, this was wild yeast fermented with some whole bunches used. With the traditional fermented Neldner portion giving the wine weight and richness, the Riedl fruit gives the wine the added dimension of freshness, perfume and bright red berry note.
The various parts were largely aged in older neutral oak (Riedl in tank for first 8 months), with just a tiny portion of new French oak used for the Neldner wine.
The result is a lovely juicy red with some classic Grenache spice. A hint of oak with soft tannins. Made to enjoy now but will drink well for at least 3 years.
"This has a fresh, lively, raspberry nose with light florals, some blue fruit and boysenberries, too. The palate has very round, soft and juicy raspberry fruit flesh and light vanilla to close. " 91 pts Nick Stock, James Suckling

This is Magpie Estate's premium Grenache, at Magpie we only release the wine when we are totally convinced of the quality. The grapes come from the Neldner vineyard in the Gomersal sub region. These are 55+ year old vines.
We selected the three best puncheon's, all 2 year old French oak, and at blending added 3% Eden Valley Shiraz.
Classic Gomersal nose- raspberry, plum, cinnamon and clove spice, white pepper and some creamy oak too. The nose really evokes the floral and spicy characters so typical of the Barossa Valley.
Bright and juicy with strawberry and raspberry fruit, black cherry and lots of spice- 5 spice, cinnamon, clove, white pepper and creamy oak. Good acidity too means it's fresh and bright and will evolve well over the next 3-4 years.

The first release of ‘The Malcolm’ Shiraz was the 1994 vintage and it quickly became a legendary wine with the follow on 1995 and 1996 releases. Our goal has always been to push the boundaries of Shiraz - to pick ultra-ripe and then age in all new oak for longer than typical maturation. Importantly the final wine, although considered powerful and full-bodied, was
superbly well balanced and complex. This is the first release since the 2012 wine.
The 2017 Malcolm is quite unique in that it is the first wine made using only the highest quality fruit from our recently acquired, first estate vineyard, the Smalltown vineyard, in the
prized Ebenezer sub-region of northern Barossa Valley. We selected just a few rows from the original 1992 plantings that quickly looked like they were going to special. The vines are dry grown and cluster thinned for maximum flavour intensity and the bunches were left to hang longer than is typical for fruit used in other Magpie Estate wines. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 15 months in new French oak puncheons, and then racked into new American oak puncheons for the final 15 months of maturation.
Very rich, dark cherry red in the glass. The nose offers up intense fruit aromas of black cherry and plum, alongside toasty mocha oak, liquorice and spice. Rich and textured with a velvety
palate. This is an intensely flavoured Barossa Shiraz with great complexity and tannins that give the wine great length. The 2017 is quite an elegant style, yet still a very rich Shiraz, showing the depth of fruit of the 2017 vintage. Voluptuous, hedonistic and drinkable now with
good aeration, although the wine clearly has many years ahead of it.
The Malcolm Shiraz is only released in the finest vintages in small volume to ensure the quality standard is maintained, and the reputation for capturing the true essence of Barossa Shiraz
upheld. This release will rank alongside the best Malcolm's we have made, we are genuinely excited about this wine!!

Our first release and the grapes all came from our new estate Smalltown vineyard in Ebenzer. 25 year old vine Cabernet Sauvignon vines on the property have turned out to make wine as good as we had hoped. Low yielding and picked ripe, but not overripe. Nearly 24 months in mostly French oak, with a small amount in American, a large proportion of the oak was new as the wine really soaked the oak up and it still preserved all the intense cassis and red berry fruit.
Voluptuous and delicious now however it will age for a decade or more.
"Crushed and destemmed, 22 months in 75% French and 25% American oak. A serious medium to full-bodied cabernet with powerful blackcurrant and bay leaf/black olive notes on the finish." 93pts James Halliday Jan 2020
