Valenciso Rioja new limited releases

Valenciso is one of our most popular houses, and the wines are simply fabulous. Valenciso was established in 1998 as a collaboration between ex Bodegas Palacios’ Luis Valentin and Carmen Enciso. With a wealth of experience in Rioja wine production, they decided to primarily focus on just one style of wine - a classically structured, subtle and elegantly fine Reserva. Situated in the town of Ollauri, just 4 km from Haro, they are at the north-west limit of Rioja Alta - with vineyards in Ollauri, Briones, Haro, Rodezno and Villalba. At altitudes of 400-600m, the climate here has a strong Atlantic influence, and the wind that blows in the summer evenings cools the grapes to enhance acidity, finesse and aromatic complexity. From the very beginning Luis and Carmen have had a clear vision. They follow sustainable viticulture, do not use irrigation, and do not fine their wine. Significantly, they use concrete tanks for vinification, a strong statement when across Rioja traditional concrete tanks have been replaced with stainless steel. But they believe this is best in order to craft wines with longevity, and maintain freshness and vibrancy. It is this quiet determination, integrity and emphasis on quality that have made this small winery one of the most respected by Rioja lovers and wine writers alike. The results speak for themselves.

We have a tiny amount of their very rare - 10-% Graciano, and not much more of the sensational 10 anos, a wine that remarkable ages 5 years in tank and 5 in oak, yet is deep, dark, concentrated and fresh. The 2008 was stunning and this may be even better. They come in wooden boxes of 3x75cl.

Valenciso 10 Anos Después Rioja Reserva 2010

Spain

Latest release of this sensational Rioja, aged 10 years before release.
Only the 5th incarnation of ‘10 Años Después’ the 2010 vintage follows the same, well established mantra – the simple belief that a great vintage followed by expert and patient winemaking will yield some excellent results. 2010 was very dry, even for Rioja Alta, rainfall being just over half of the historic average – this put the Tempranillo vines under just the right amount of stress to produce some perfectly concentrated fruit. Fermentation and 5 years ageing in concrete was followed by 4 years ageing in Russian oak, the extra fine grain carefully selected to ensure the fruit character and freshness isn’t undermined.

Valenciso Rioja Blanco 2018

Valenciso Rioja Blanco 2018

Spain

Pale golden yellow in colour with notes of delicate woodsmoke, roast chestnuts and preserved lemon peel on the nose. The palate is broad, well integrated and complete, with nuts, stone fruit, minerality and a dry savoury finish and persistent lemon freshness.
"The barrel-fermented white 2018 Fermentado en Barrica shows very integrated oak and a subtleness and elegance that I love. They use Caucasian oak because they think it has smaller pores than French and it suits their needs for a creamy but not maderized white. This blend of 70% Viura with 30% Garnacha Blanca has insinuating notes of white fruit and flowers with a spicy twist and a terribly tasty palate, beautifully textured and with a chalky sensation that transported me to the limestone-rich soils of Rioja. It's medium-bodied, balanced, clean and precise. It has all that it takes for a nice evolution in bottle, but it can also be enjoyed young." 94pts Luis Gutierrez The Wine Advocate

Valenciso Rioja Graciano 2017

Spain

Graciano represents less than 2% of plantings in Rioja. Its inherent pronounced acidity and intense colour means it’s more commonly seen in blends – the right conditions to make a wine solely from this variety don’t come around too often. April frosts in 2017 meant that only a few bunches were left on the vines by the time an almost perfect summer and autumn provided the long slow ripening conditions Graciano needs to really flourish. Fermented in concrete and aged for 24 months in Russian oak to perfectly embellish those sweet balsamic notes that accompany ripe fruits and notes of mocha.

Valenciso Rioja Reserva 2012

Spain

"A beautiful, supple, dense Rioja, drinking beautifully. Meaty with deep berry fruit aromas, hints of cedar, oak and spice. Produced purely from Tempranillo, and aged in new French oak barriques for 16 months, this wine shows all the elegance of the variety, medium-full bodied and smooth. Meaty with sweet berry fruits think strawberry and raspberry with cherry too, integrated oak and good acidity. It's simply a beautiful attractive Rioja, not old school but not ultra modern either, the emphasis is on the sweet fruit that is fresh and alive with lots of other interesting nuances.
2012 was a warm and dry year, when some vines were blocked and stopped ripening the grapes. Surprisingly enough, many wines have retained more freshness than what the natural conditions of the year anticipated. Valenciso's 2012 Reserva has more stuffing and power than the 2011 and comes from a year that was saved by some rains in September and big temperature contrasts between day and night. It's very tasty, almost salty (the words of Jean Gonon from St Joseph saying "our wines are salty, to be enjoyed with food. There is no room for sweetness in our wines," comes to my mind). It's a modern classical Rioja in the making, still young but showing some development and incipient complexity. These wines develop slowly and nicely in bottle and seem to hit the spot after some eight years after the harvest." 93+pts Luis Gutierrez The Wine Advocate
