Fil-loxera

Fil-loxera & Cia 'Beberas de la Cope de tu Hermana' 2018

Spain

'you will drink from your sister's cup'
A blend of Macabeo 45% Monastrell 23% (red grapes vinified as whitte), Verdil 18% Subirat Parent (Malvasia) 14%
Spent a fair bit of time on skins, wild yeast fermented, 70% aged in steel, 30% in wood, 15% French and 15% Acacia.
Perfumed nose with white peach, some floral notes, hints of pineapple and nutty oak.
Fresh and crisp but also rich and textural. Nutty oak alongside spice, orange, creamy stone fruits too. A hint of phenolics too, but all round a genuinely delicious and intriguing wine. Sure to be incredibly food versatile too.
".... It's an unusual and gastronomic white produced with a blend of white and red grapes vinified in white. I It feels full of character, powerful but fresh, with some leesy aromas and a touch of white pepper, perhaps from being partially matured in oak and acacia barrels. This is the best vintage for this bottling so far. 5,179 bottles and 74 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2019." 91pts Luis Gutiérrez The Wine advocate 9/20

Fil-loxera & Cia 'La Mujer Caballo Blau' 2018

Spain

La Mujer Caballo named after the extraordinary world of the horse woman- half woman and half horse.
This is a delicious wine made solely from a very rare variety called Arco. They found an old vineyard that was going to be ripped up and agreed to buy the fruit and make a wine. Turned out to be great and they researched the variety to being Arco which used to be famous in the region of Fontanars dells Alforins. It's now a variety being replanted by many. This is a perfumed, complex, quite delicious red, lots of spice with a long finish too.
" The varietal Arco 2018 La Mujer Caballo Blau has a floral and earthy nose....This is probably the ancient variety with more potential and the one that has called the attention from more people. There is a common aromatic theme in many wines that I suspect comes from the vinification and/or élevage, despite which, the varietal comes through quite clearly, the flowers with the earthy touch but also Mediterranean herbs and perhaps a balsamic touch of resin. It's medium-bodied, has fine tannins, moderate alcohol and very good freshness. 1,197 bottles were filled in August 2019 after 10 months in used barriques. 93 pts Luis Gutiérrez

Fil-loxera & Cia 'La Mujer Caballo Toronja' 2018

Spain

La Mujer Caballo named after the extraordinary world of the horse woman- half woman and half horse.
A fabulously interesting, textural wine. Toronja is Orange, and this is an orange wine, not just because of its vinification techniques but due to the varieties used. From vineyards planted in 1972. Seriously complex and a wine that just grows and changes in the glass. The food matching ideas are numerable!!
"The orange 2018 La Mujer Caballo Toronja has a spectacular nose of candied apricots and a dry and powerful palate with fine tannins derived from the fermentation of the wine with the skins of the 60% Valencí and 10% Moscatel Romano grapes plus 30% of other varieties some of which are still unidentified from old head-pruned vines. They say the wine is very aromatic and reminds them of a Mediterranean forest, which is a good definition. The grapes are picked late, but the wine is still 13% alcohol and full of flavours and aromas. With time in the glass, the notes of hops that I found in the other white seem to be even stronger here. Again, a white (orange) full of personality. It went through malolactic and matured with lees in oak and acacia barrels for eight months. I liked it very much. 1,209 bottles were filled in August 2019." 93 pts Luis Gutiérrez The Wine Advocate 9/20

Fil-loxera & Cia 'La Mujer Caballo Verd' 2018

Spain

La Mujer Caballo named after the extraordinary world of the horse woman- half woman and half horse.
Largely coming from one old vineyard, this is a rare variety and it was this vineyard and its fruit that made them seek out similar vineyards. Powerful and savoury, black fruits, spice and liquorice, like all the Fil-loxera wines there is a cool freshness. Made with Ullet de Perdiu (Ojito de Perdiz).
"The very aromatic and floral red 2018 La Mujer Caballo Verd is differentiated from the others by its green writing on the label. It's produced with the obscure Ullet de Perdiu grape picked at 15.42% alcohol, but this time with lower acidity than in previous years. It has a liquorish touch, heady and ripe, almost like a late-harvest wine, but the grapes ripen and are picked early. It has some dusty tannins and an earthy rusticity. This is most unusual. 1,194 bottles were filled in August 2019." 91 pts Luis Gutiérrez The Wine Advocate 9/20

Fil-loxera & Cia 'sentada sobre la bestia' 2017

Spain

sitting on the beast!
This is a fabulous rich, yet fresh red. Most of the vines are old, low yielding and reflect their various sites and terroir. A fabulous winter warmer, but serve it cool and it comes alive, being very drinkable and food friendly.
"Cropped from a dry year that resulted in an early harvest, the red blend 2017 Sentada Sobre la Bestia (the old red label) is an unusual blend of 47% Monastrell, 22% Tempranillo, 16% Garnacha Tintorera, 11% Graciano and 4% white Malvasía. Each variety fermented separately in small vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in a mixture of stainless steel and casks; after the winter they racked the wine and made the blend, which was then bottled. The warm vintage delivered a ripe wine with over 15% alcohol, but the alcohol is not noticeable. The wine is quite fruit-driven and expressive, with a juicy, round palate with good balance and acidity. The wine manages to keep the freshness in a very warm year." 93 pts Luis Gutiérrez The Wine Advocate NY
