Boutinot 'The Tea Leaf'

Boutinot 'The Tea Leaf' 2018

South Africa

Made from 40 year old bush vines, some 70-80 years old, 750 metres above sea level this mountainous vineyard is also home to the indigenous Rooibos tea plants and now has grapes from another vineyard in the blend. It's c60% Chenin Blanc in the main with Grenache Blanc and Palomino -wild yeast fermented. Ripe apple and pear on the nose, a touch of ginger and pepper too- classic old vine South African Chenin. Really full on the palate with ripe apple and pear, pineapple and a touch of spice, concentrated and quite textural but also fresh and crisp at the same time. I think it's a really delicious example, ripe but not overly, really tangy with lovely limey acidity on the long minerally finish, some spice too. Beautifully balanced. Delicious on its own but a versatile food wine; think fish, white meats especially pork, lightly spiced dishes too. Top wine.

Casa da Passarella 'A Descoberta' Dao 2019

A really attractive unoaked blend of Encruzado, Malvasia Fina and Verdelho. Quite floral and grapey on the nose. Pear drop, hints of melon and peach, grapey notes and a touch of spice and herb such as rosemary on the palate. All really clean and lively with citrus zest on the finish, and a pronounced slatey minerality; characterful and really tasty. I think like Spain many of Portugal's most interesting wines are white...

Fil-loxera & Cia 'Beberas de la Cope de tu Hermana' 2018

'you will drink from your sister's cup' A blend of Macabeo 45% Monastrell 23% (red grapes vinified as whitte), Verdil 18% Subirat Parent (Malvasia) 14% Spent a fair bit of time on skins, wild yeast fermented, 70% aged in steel, 30% in wood, 15% French and 15% Acacia. Perfumed nose with white peach, some floral notes, hints of pineapple and nutty oak. Fresh and crisp but also rich and textural. Nutty oak alongside spice, orange, creamy stone fruits too. A hint of phenolics too, but all round a genuinely delicious and intriguing wine. Sure to be incredibly food versatile too. ".... It's an unusual and gastronomic white produced with a blend of white and red grapes vinified in white. I It feels full of character, powerful but fresh, with some leesy aromas and a touch of white pepper, perhaps from being partially matured in oak and acacia barrels. This is the best vintage for this bottling so far. 5,179 bottles and 74 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2019." 91pts Luis Gutiérrez The Wine advocate 9/20

Sogrape Carvalhais 'Grao Vasco' Dao 2019

From the giant Sogrape operation that is increasingly making some top quality wines, comes this rather delicious red Dao. A blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Alfrocheiro, Jaen Tinto. Unoaked and bright, lovey perfumed berry fruits on the nose with a hint of almond. Juicy and plummy with a core of sweet fruit, an almost creamy texture, making this enjoyable with or without food. Great value and very tasty!

Montresor ‘Urban Park’ Appassimento 2018

Made with the classic Valpolicella grapes- Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grapes harvested from hillside vineyards north of Verona. 'Appassimento' refers to the process by which the grapes are dried for a few months before being pressed and vinified. In this instance the grapes are dried for 30 days before vinification, and the wine spends 6 months in oak. The resulting red is rich with some residual sweetness. Interesting name and label, i struggle with this type of wine- often being far too sweet. However we like this, more bitter sweet with ripe cherry, leading to a chocolate and red cherry flavour with bramble fruit, hints of cocoa and some sweetness but all balanced with good acidity and a touch of creamy oak. Proper Autumnal red, serve with rich stews and casseroles, but also likely to be good with blue cheese.

Caliterra 'Petreo' Carmenere 2017

A lovely, elegant almost floral Carmenere. ".. This is a less ripe and fresher Carmenère, bottled with 13.5% alcohol and very good acidity and freshness after fermenting in used French barriques. Part of the wine also aged in those barriques, and 60% of the volume matured in clay "tinajas" from Spain for some 18 months. Winemaker Rodrigo Zamorano described it as "a Carmenere that is not ashamed to be Carmenere," as it has intense and pungent herbal notes and is very spicy and powerful. It has surprising natural acidity and very fine tannins, and in a way, it reminds me of a Cabernet Franc from the Loire. Again, a wine that transcends the warm and dry conditions of the year. 3,000 bottles produced." 93+ Luis Gutiérrez Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate

Cathartic Wines 'Catharsis' Cotes du Rousillon Rouge 2019

From the deep South, grown on schist, old vine Grenache- low yielding and full of flavour, destemmed and crushed whilst still fermenting to keep all the vibrant fruit and spice at the forefront. Juicy. Made by Richard Bray this is small production hand crafted wine of real interest.
