Les Volets Haute Vallée de l'Aude IGP Pinot Noir 2019

France

The grapes get the heat the day, but being at altitude in the Pyrenees foothills benefit from the cooler nights allowing longer ripening of the grapes. Bright red berry fruit on an attractive nose, cherry and raspberry on the palate with a touch of dried herb, hints of spice and a lively crunchy finish. Served cool this is a lovely example and way better than many Bourgogne Pinot Noir's at significantly more money. Juicy and really very attractive. Great with white and red meats and also Mediterranean vegetable dishes.OS

Messmer 'Made in Pfalz' Spatburgunder 2018

Germany

Approximately 70% of the Pinot Noir is kept in stainless steel, whilst 30% spends 3-4 months in 500-900 litre old oak barrels. Aromas of bright strawberry fruit. Fresh and juicy red berry characters on the palate with savoury ad spice notes, all backed by supple tannins. Drink with crispy duck pancakes or char sui pork dishes.

Luigi Bosca 'Signature' Pinot Noir 2018

Argentina

I really quite like this -tasted and drunk twice a week apart. Its from Fina el Paraiso in Maipu. Aged 6 months in French oak. 14.5% alcohol, which initially put me off, but that's what is dangerous about drinking/tasting with your eyes. For sure its not light and ethereal but tasty and well balanced for sure it is ! Berry fruits with some meat and roasted vegetable characters on the nose. Bright and fresh on the palate, red berry fruits, spice, forest floor, oak and some hints of chocolate. It's not Burgundy, but varietal and tasty it sure is. Would be great with a rosemary infused shepherds pie!

Montes Alpha Aconcagua

Montes Alpha Aconcagua Pinot Noir 2019

Chile

A really attractive yet full flavoured, quite big style of Pinot Noir from steep mountain vineyards. Lovely raspberry, black cherry and vanilla oak on the nose. Really bright and pure with red berry fruits to the fore, spice and toasty vanilla oak. It's a lovely mouthful of wine, if you like a richer Pinot- drinking really well now and will age for 2-3 years.

Harewood Estate Denmark Pinot Noir 2019

Australia

"Denmark (sub-region) pinot noir. Machine picked, cultured yeast, six months in 15% new French oak. Light in colour but there’s plenty going on. It’s a meaty, spicy pinot. Cherries are the backdrop, or the conduit, with woody spices flying hither and thither. Tangy finish, complete with mint and anise notes. It’s a most enjoyable wine to drink, it has to be said." 91pts Campbell Mattinson 'The Wine Front'

Folding Hill 'Ballasalla' Pinot Noir 2017

New Zealand

This is the 'second' wine of Folding Hill. Hand picked fruit from the region of Bendigo, wild and cultured yeast fermentation and 10 months in French oak. Quite a meaty nose with some plum and spice on the nose. Bright and juicy with raspberry and black cherry, spice, some meaty, earthy notes and a touch of oak. Good acidity keeps it crisp and clean. Nice weight and freshness, lovely now but will age too. There is a purity and energy about this that Burgundy just cannot match within the price bracket.
