What's included in this mixed case?

Apello Sauvignon Blanc 2018

New Zealand

Perfumed nose with elderflower, grapefruit, hints of passion fruit and gooseberry. Crisp and aromatic with bags of citrus fruit, again grapefruit, elderflower, mango and a touch of gooseberry. Good acidity keeps it clean and its tangy and refreshing and a really good Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Is its usual more elegant style, nothing too overt and very drinkable.

Individual bottle price £9.95

Cave des Vignerons Réunis de Valençay Sauvignon Blanc 2018

France

Sébastien Vaillant and friend Damien Bossier are the only two members of the Vignerons de Valençay co-operative, making it the smallest of its kind in the Loire and possibly in France Their 40 hectares of vines are located on the hillsides surrounding the River Cher and share much of the same silex (flint) soils that make the finest of the Loire’s wines. 2018 seems to be a great vintage in the Loire- for whites anyway. This is really expressive with crisp green fruits leading to peachy almost pineapple fruit. Zesty acidity makes the wine really fresh and bright, quite delicious and all in beautiful balance.

Kardos Dry Furmint 2017

Pale green in colour with an intense nose. Fresh, with notes of gooseberry, pear and lime. which follow through on the palate. Dry and beautifully crisp with an elegant minerality which keeps the wine in balance.

Weingut Hanewald-Schwerdt Grauburgunder Trocken 2017

Germany

Pineapple, hints of rosehip, stone fruit and spice on the nose. Dry and packed with lovely fresh stone fruits with citrus too, a gently creamy mid-palate with some spice on the fresh finish- pineapple flavours with good acidity. Not as rich as a classic Pinot Gris and that makes it a bit more food friendly.

Individual bottle price £11.99

Cave de Juliénas-Chaintré Macon-Chaintré 'Cuvée Quatre 2017

France

Lovely bright fresh citrus fruits, with just a hint of delicate, nutty oak/lees influence. High quality white burgundy from this modern co-operative. Great with fish, white meats, risotto's and similar, drinking so well already.

La Battistina Gavi Del Comune Di Gavi 'Nuovo Quadro' 2018

Italy

A long-term NYwines favourite, this new 2018 is truly excellent, again. As in previous years, the wine has a great deal of subtlety and elegance and yet there is delicious underlying palate weight and intensity. It is still an aperitif/fish/salad wine but would happily cope with some decent flavour. The length is lovely.

Zorgvliet 'Silver Myn' Argentum 2017

South Africa

It's a big, juicy blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Juicy, bright nose with plum and cassis, a touch of violet and prune too. It's a chunky deep red on the palate black berry and cherry fruits to the fore with some red berry giving it a juicy, fresh feel. A LOT of wine for the money.

Araldica Barbera d'Asti 'Ceppi Storici' 2016

Italy

Almost a shop 'ever present' and still represents terrific value. Sourced from old vines this has always been a forward style of Barbera, and the new 2016 is maybe the best yet! it's dark in the glass with smokey plum, black cherry and just a hint of balsamic on the nose. The palate is likewise- full flavoured with intense black cherry and some more meaty savoury notes, chocolate and a touch of creamy oak. Very approachable, good acidity - typical of the grape, long and quite delicious and food versatile - tonight matched with a casserole of pork shoulder with tomato and vegetables.

Madfish Pinot Noir 2018

Australia

A very attractive, easy drinking, fresh Pinot from Western Australia. Strawberry fruit on the nose with hints of cherry, herbs and subtle spice. Bright on the palate, well rounded too with a lovely blend of berry fruits and delicate spice think clove, and very subtle oak. The bright energy showed was very impressive for such value. Serve cool to emphasize this.

De Martino Reserva 'Legado' Carmenere 2017

Chile

Varietal and typical but also with plenty of sweet fruit. Tomato leaf, violets, plums, hints of chocolate and oak too on the nose. Vibrant and pure, juicy and bright, plum , raspberry, herbal notes and creamy oak, lovely soft tannins and good acidity make this a really delicious example.

Individual bottle price £13.95

Weingut Hanewald-Schwerdt Spatburgunder 2016

Germany

A lovely German Pinot, though called Spatburgunder and in a fluted bottle. Bright berry and cherry fruit with a touch of forest floor earthy, savoury character on the nose. Bright and fresh with lovely sweet berry fruit allied to some savoury meaty characters and a lick of oak. was great with some Asian styled crispy duck, it's got good weight and body for a German Pinot Noir and a great value!

Magpie Estate 'Clovella' Mataro-Grenache 2016

Australia

This wine used to form the backbone of 'The Call Bag'. This is a wine we have recently stopped making and now the fruit goes to this wine which we make for one of our importers. It's now strikingly packaged by them! It's labelled Mataro-Grenache but in fact its more like 65% Grenache 35% Mourvedre. Largely coming from the Clovella vineyard on the edge of the Gomersal sub region. Here Mataro (Mourvedre) and Grenache are co-fermented in largely older French and a little American oak. Here the wine spends some 18 months before bottling. A blend we have always loved at Magpie. Lovely perfume of black cherry, plum, cinnamon and clove. Similar on the palate, a real antidote to some of the more primary, big wines. This is really beguiling with cherry, plum, dried herbs, lots of spice, integrated seasoned oak, long and really quite elegant. Great with spiced foods, loves new season lamb, and Mediterranean inspired dishes. Drink now and over next 5-7 years.
