Magpie Estate 'Rag & Bone' Riesling 2020

2020 was a good year for Eden Valley Riesling. This is pretty dry. Lovely perfumed nose with lime, red apple, hints of pineapple, quite floral. Tangy with lovely fruit and good acidity. Lime and red apple with an appealing grapey character. Clean and crisp, has a lovely focussed finish. Would be good with Asian cuisine.

Magpie Estate 'The Selfie Stick' Dry Muscat 2017

Rolf's sister Christa makes the white wines. Whilst over blending in 2016 I tasted a barrel of wine that was part of a blend for a client. It was a dry Muscat that blew me away, I loved it's vivacity and grapey freshness. So much so that I contacted the grower and immediately put an order in for 4-5 tonnes of grapes from the next vintage, and here is the result! The Muscat grapes come from the famous Terra Ricca Farms in the Riverland, known for their quality fruit. 100% Muscat partly fermented and aged in tank. Partly in old oak. We blended the two together. This is classic, dry, aromatic Muscat. Floral, grapey, white peach, jasmine and honeysuckle on an evocative nose. Crisp, and fresh, bursting with grapey characters, ripe pear and lime zest on the finish, just a hint of spice. Very refreshing and sure to go well with lightly spiced Asian and Asian influenced dishes.

Magpie Estate 'The Wishbone' Shiraz-Grenache 2018

The new Wishbone is a blend of Riverland and Barossa grapes. 70% Shiraz, 25% Grenache, 5% Petite Sirah. Aged mostly in tank with a small percentage aged in oak barrels. Bright berry fruits, pepper and spice on the nose. Juicy, fresh style, raspberry, black and red cherry, sarsaparilla and plum. A hint of creamy oak and spice too. Easy drinking and in the vein of previous releases although just a touch fuller than the 2017. Very versatile with or without food too.

Magpie Estate 'The Fakir'

Magpie Estate 'The Fakir' Grenache 2019

The latest Fakir! The first since 2012 and very different in style. The Grenache largely comes from the Neldner vineyards in Gomersal, we added a portion from Rolf's Riedl vineyard, this was wild yeast fermented with some whole bunches used. With the traditional fermented Neldner portion giving the wine weight and richness, the Riedl fruit gives the wine the added dimension of freshness, perfume and bright red berry note. The various parts were largely aged in older neutral oak (Riedl in tank for first 8 months), with just a tiny portion of new French oak used for the Neldner wine. The result is a lovely juicy red with some classic Grenache spice. A hint of oak with soft tannins. Made to enjoy now but will drink well for at least 3 years. "This has a fresh, lively, raspberry nose with light florals, some blue fruit and boysenberries, too. The palate has very round, soft and juicy raspberry fruit flesh and light vanilla to close. Magpie Estate 'The Sack' Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

We have just done an offer on Sack 2017, but i am delighted to have the 2016 back in, and from such a great vintage. The 2016 Sack comes from 3 different vineyards and contains around 10% Eden Valley Shiraz. As ever aged in a mixture of American and French oak both 300 litre and 475 litre barrels, around 30% new oak this year, the balance in mostly 1 year old barrels but also some older oak. in the blend. 2016 was a really good vintage. . The wine has lovely black cherry, ripe plum, hints of cassis with spice on the nose, some creamy oak and a hint of chocolate. Juicy and opulent on the palate- black cherry, plum and blackcurrant with some hints of red berry fruit too, subtle notes of liquorice and black pepper with some creamy oak. Tannins are ripe. It's a medium bodied style of Sack which is drinking well now and over the next 5-7 years. "Barossa blackberry and toast with inflections of dried fruits, orange peel included, to the point where the famed 'Xmas cake' descriptor is apt. It's not a huge release but there's ample flavour here and the balance of all components is good too. A wine you can rely on." 92 pts Campbell Mattinson Halliday Wine Companion 2020

Magpie Estate 'The Wit and Shanker' Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Our first release and the grapes all came from our new estate Smalltown vineyard in Ebenzer. 25 year old vine Cabernet Sauvignon vines on the property have turned out to make wine as good as we had hoped. Low yielding and picked ripe, but not overripe. Nearly 24 months in mostly French oak, with a small amount in American, a large proportion of the oak was new as the wine really soaked the oak up and it still preserved all the intense cassis and red berry fruit. Voluptuous and delicious now however it will age for a decade or more. "Crushed and destemmed, 22 months in 75% French and 25% American oak. A serious medium to full-bodied cabernet with powerful blackcurrant and bay leaf/black olive notes on the finish." 93pts James Halliday Jan 2020
