Wine Note

Magpie Estate 'The Malcolm'

The second Malcolm release in a row, next up will be 2012.
2010 was a fabulous vintage in the Barossa, lovely cool summer produced wines with freshness and good structure, almost a crispness to the fruit which is definitely much blacker and darker in style than 2009 which produced more opulent red and black fruited Shiraz.
From a single, cluster thinned vineyard in the Western Ridge region of the Barossa. 2 puncheons, 1 hogshead. Aged in new American oak for 10 months then racked into new Mercurey French oak for around 16 months.
Classic 2010 opaque colour, dense black fruits on the nose with toasty, vanillan oak, mocha and chocolate too, then the black cherry and cassis of the wine comes up again.
Mouth-filling with a velvety texture, black fruits to the fore with plain chocolate, liquorice and creamy oak. Big and really full bodied with massive fruit and generous oak, so young but all in place to be one of our best Malcolm's ever, drinkable in youth but will show its full hand over the next 5-20 years. I am obviously biased but I think this is worth comparing with the legendary 1996 wine, and the 2005.
Packaged in very smart wooden 6 packs.
Improved exchange rate means we have been able to lower the price significantly.
