Clonakilla 'Hilltops'

Canberra: Best Shiraz, Best Red, Best Wine & 95/100 Halliday
Despite being a revered name in Australian wine, Clonakilla is not a winery one associates with wine show success as the wines are rarely entered. It surprised some that the Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz 2009 was entered in the regional 2010 Canberra Wine Show. Perhaps Tim Kirk was looking for confirmation of what he already knew about the vintage, prompting him to write in his newsletter 18 months ago “A word on the 2009 vintage. Stunning. That will do for now.” Whatever the reason, it had been a decade since this wine, the Clonakilla 'regular' Shiraz had been entered, to say it did well is an understatement! Firstly, the Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz 2009 was awarded a Gold Medal. The Top Gold in fact. Then, the first of a magical treble. The wine was awarded the Trophy for Best Shiraz of the show. It then triumphed again in a much bigger field to be awarded Best Red of the Show. And the crowning glory, the wine was named Champion Wine of Show!

Of course, show results are one thing, third party endorsements another. James Halliday rates it 95 Points; “this is delicious as a young wine, or in ten years”. Chris Shanahan is on the same page “The 2009’s sourced from three vineyards near Young and shows Tim’s magic touch. I rate this the best yet of this wine”. The Wine Front says “It’s an excellent edition. In a word: spiffy”. With this in mind, the comments of Campbell Mattinson are probably most apt when he says “to put it bluntly – I don’t think they’re going to have any trouble selling this year’s release of Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz".
