Magpie Estate 'The Malcolm'

Shiraz, 2010

Australia Red

Barossa Valley 75cl

After a couple of tricky years The Malcolm will get back to back releases 2009 and 2010 (no 2011). Both looking pretty good and quite different. A particularly fine looking rib of beef seemed a sensible time to taste this (bottled late 2012, will release in 2014).
From a single, cluster thinned vineyard in the Western Ridge region of the Barossa. 2 puncheons, 1 hogshead. Aged in new American oak for 10 months then racked into new Mercurey French oak for around 16 months.
Classic 2010 opaque colour, dense black fruits on the nose with toasty, vanillan oak, mocha and chocolate too, then the black cherry and cassis of the wine comes up again.
Mouth-filling with a velvety texture, black fruits to the fore with plain chocolate, liquorice and creamy oak. Big and really full bodied with massive fruit and generous oak, so young but all in place to be one of our best Malcolm's ever, drinkable in youth but will show its full hand over the next 5-20 years. I am obviously biased but I think this is worth comparing wit the legendary 1996 wine.
