Brampton

Viognier, 2004

South Africa White

Coastal Region 75cl

Well it seems the people at Rustenberg didn't really like my review of the 2003 version, so they asked the agents to make sure I tasted the 2004, which I did a couple of nights ago. Unfortunately I did not have any good-looking friends available at the time, so I happily nailed the bottle by myself...The wine was delicious I am happy to report, and not surprising given the people who make it - indeed that was the most surprising thing about the '03 - I had not tasted a bad wine from Rustenberg at that time. The new 2004 was balanced most importantly, though still 15%. Perhaps the extra year for the vines has helped...Still, powerful and ripe with deep aromatics on the nose, the palate was very powerful and richly textured, with ripe apricots, mango and mineral on the mouth, with some very timely acidity on the finish. All round this is a delicious wine (and Viognier is not my favourite grape), heady yet balanced with no hint of being overdone in any fashion. Thanks for the sample!
