Vidal Estate
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2002
Not Specified
New Zealand, Hawkes Bay 75cl
The previous vintage was a gold medal winner in last years International Wine Challenge. However this new 2002 is in my mind a big step up. 2002 was a cracking year for reds, and it shows in this a Gold medal winner at the 2003 Air New Zealand Wine Show. Deep in colour it has an inviting nose: red and black fruits-lots of plum and cassis with a touch of oak too. Full bodied and deep, yet with lovely ripe tannins. Plum and black cherry fruit with a touch of mocha, chocalate and spicy oak. Round juicy and very easy drinking-it is a delicious drop. Hard to see how it can become a lot more enjoyable, but under screw-cap it is sure to age for a while. c£9.50 and very good value.
