This is the second release of Penfold's new premium Shiraz. From the Barossa valley and aged in French oak. The 1997 was an excellent debut and shows that 1997 is still an underrated vintage. Here in the legendary 1998 vintage the wine moves up another gear. Still young yet already drinking well. Fantastic with some aged beef, rib on the bone! Smoky sweet fruit, oak and pepper on a sexy opulent nose. Really rich and full, yet not showing the almost raisin/prune-like over mature flavours that, to me mar some of the 1998's. Red and black fruits with spice and lots of toasty oak. The ripe tannins are just beginning to soften, and this is an explosive lavish red of the highest quality. Enjoy over the next 10 years!
