Scheiblhofer
Merlot, 2001
Not Specified
Austria, Burgenland 75cl
One of young Erich Scheiblhofer's wines. Sadly the 2000 had sold out before we started to import these wines. Despite 2001 being a pretty poor vintage, Erich has fashioned some superb wines. None better than this voluptuous Merlot. I am not normally a fan of straight Merlot, but this is delicious. Aged in 100% new oak, Erich has been lessening the amount of American oak used, and i think this has helped. 70% French 30% American oak, all barrique. Yields are kept very low and some cold soaking is employed. The result is a wine with a lovely perfumed red fruit nose, swet and with some creamy toasty oak. . Full and dense with ripe plummy fruit, mouthhfilling yet really opulent. Just a touch of tannin on the finish stops this being ready now. Although delicious now 2-3 months, maybe more will see tis even softer. An impressive wine despite it's youth. Available in JUne.
