Stepp & Gaul
Pinot Noir 'Steinrassel', 2009
Germany
Pfalz 75cl
The first red i have tried from this impressive new outfit. We have loved the whites and this Pinot is very impressive too. 14% alcohol, this is not an excuse for a Pinot! This is proper Pinot Noir (and i have to say there are many top examples coming out of Germany nowadays even if not very common in the UK). Really varietal nose with raspberry and cherry fruit, with some meaty notes, spice and toasty oak. It's a medium bodied style, lovely sweet red berry fruits with good acidity, lots of spice a hint of meat and a slight ferrous quality with charry oak on the finish. It's very good indeed, reminds me of an Oregon Pinot with it's fruit character and structure, but has more acidity and slightly more red fruit. It could age well too. Not inexpensive but genuinely high quality and more than stands up next to village level Burgundian wines.
