Ernie Els 'The Big Easy'
, 2009
South Africa Red
Western Cape 75cl
I am very sceptical about famous people launching wine brands, but Ernie Els has been the name behind some very good wines over the last 10+ years. This is a new release and at the recent Wines of South Africa tasting really impressed. It's a blend of 52% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Mourvedre, 9% Grenache and 3% Viognier. Deep in colour, attractive black cherry and plum fruit with spice and oak on the nose. Rich and flashy on the palate, lovely sweet juicy black fruits, liquorice and spice too. Plenty of oak, but more than matched with bright fruit, a touch of tannin too. It's drinking well already and crying out for a good steak.
