Macia Batle P.de Maria
Binnissalem, Mallorca 75cl
This is a new wine we have specially shipped in from Mallorca. I was alerted to this by a post on Jancis Robinson's website, that detailed the influential wines of the Year in El Mundo newspaper and website www.elmundovino.com
After the 3 wines of the year there were 12 honourable mentions and one went to this - not bad being in the top 15 out of thousands. Anyhow it's finally arrived, a blend of 55% Manto Negro, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Syrah, 5 % Merlot. Aged 14 months in French oak. Macia Batle say in their fact sheet "P. DE MARÍA is elaborated in collaboration with Juan Luis Pérez de Eulate (LaVinoteca) and Bodegues Macià Batle".
Well it's very good. Deep in colour, has a rich nose that has opened up beautifully over a couple of hours, rich black cherry, plum, spice, toasty oak and mocha with merest hint of raisin. It's full and rich, very savoury with dense black fruits, meat, liquorice, toasty, smokey oak, big yet ripe tannins and decent acidity. Perfect in this youthful stage with a venison sausage and red wine casserole. It's long and complex and opening up all the time. Well worth tucking some of this away for 3-7 years. High quality and distinctive wine.
