Mullineux Family Wines
Syrah, 2008
South Africa Red
Swartland 75cl
A debut release, and a really interesting one too. From the shale and granite terroirs of Swartland. Sustainably farmed vineyards, fermented only with indigenous yeasts, no additions other than minimum sulphur. Fermented and matured in barriques and 500 litre demi-muids, unfiltered and unfined. 100% Syrah and 14.5%. Ripe berry and plum fruit on the nose, quite meaty and smokey with toasty oak too. It's very young and very bright. It's not a blockbuster style, but is still a big wine. Ripe redcurrant, black cherry and plum fruits, lots of spice, meat and pepper with creamy oak giving the wine added texture and length. It's got great acidity which gives it a lovely freshness. It's a lovely Northern Rhone meets the Cape style. Will be interesting to see how this ages but i would opt for drinking it over the next 5 years. Really very good debut, and a lovely style. Both red and white debut releases have hit the ground running.
