Magpie Estate 'The Malcolm'
Shiraz, 2006
Australia Red
Barossa Valley 75cl
Our second release of the super premium Malcolm Shiraz since the 1999 release.
As with the 2005, a single vineyard and cluster thinned to one tonne to the acre. The grapes are picked fully ripe and after traditional fermentation techniques, aged in new American oak puncheons for 11 months then racked into new French oak puncheons for 14 months. A small amount of a wine destinned for The Election also made the grade as it was stylistically similar. Lavish, opulent nose with black cherry and plum, oak, mocha, vanilla, chocolate, meat and spice too. It's incredibly rich and seductive: masses of rich red and black berry fruits, intense spice and lots of toasty oak, which is smokey and gives a touch of vanilla and cream. It's looking really good and has been amazingly well recieved in Australia. It needs lots of time although will provide hedonistic drinking early in it's life. As with all Magpie reds it retains some elegance and bright fruit. With no 2007 and 2008 this will be in even more demand. Quite savoury and with a great balance. Drink 2012-2025
