Sportoletti 'Villa Fidelia'
, 2003
Italy Red
Umbria 75cl
This is Sportoletti's top red. An oak aged blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. It's a wine i have long been a fan of. The 1999 and 2001 are superb. Sadly even this cannot escape the extremes of 2003. Weighing in at 15%. It's clearly from a hot vintage. Without food it looks a little pruney. With food (tonight roast sirloin of beef) it's a balanced and delicious red!! Aged in French barriques for 12 months. Deep in colour. Rich plum, cassis and redcurrant on the nose with prune, oak and a hint of raisin. It's powerful on the palate. Without food it's verging on being overripe. Prune raisin and black cherry with some spice and oak. It shows a hint of greeness which is classic 2003 ripeness, but ripeness not obtained with a long ripening period. It was so hot that everything ripened quicker and not fully flavour ripe. It's good but with so many great wines from top vintages it's a pass. I look forward to seeing the 2004 and 2005 wines.
