Jean-Paul Balland Sancerre 'Grande Cuvée'
, 2005
France Loire
Loire Valley 75cl
Jean-Paul Balland has been the source of our 'house' Sancerre for many years. It'sconsistently excellent with crisp pure fruit and classic flint with a minerally edge. The current 2005 is drinking beautifully and the slightly fuller 2006 will follow. This is a luxury cuvée from hand picked 40 year old vines. It's riper and richer. Intense nose with white peach, some herbaceous notes too, but it's the honeyed peachy character that shines through. It's really fresh and tangy with really rich fruit. Peach and necatrine with lovely zingy citrus acidity. Broad and round with great depth. I don't think any new oak is employed but i would not be surprised if this sees some older oak during it's aging. Really delicious and really gives some of the reserve New Zealand styles a run for their money.
