Giant Steps, Yarra Valley Australia 2015's

It seems appropriate with all the buzz and hype surrounding Burgundy 2015 to offer these superlative Australian cool climate Chardonnayís and Pinot Noirís.
Phil Sextonís Giant Steps Winery has had great press since the start, but these 2015ís have really hit the jackpot garnering amazing, glowing reviews.
I tasted the range last week and was blown away by the sheer quality of this remarkable collection. They may not be cheap (sadly the exchange rate is having a big effect) but compared to Burgundy, these are bargains.
This is a sensational line up of elegant, classy, complex cool climate Australian wines.
All wines are available by the bottle, by the discounted 6 pack, and as a special mixed case of all 9 wines at a special price. We can also put in detailed tasting and winemaking notes on each wine so you can learn about the subtleties of the different vineyards and winemaking techniques.

Giant Steps Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2015

Australia

"An intense blend of grapefruit pith/zest juice is coupled with shiny acidity on a palate that is a great example of the Yarra Valley's ace in the hole with chardonnay: extreme length." 95 points James Halliday

Giant Steps Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2015

Australia

"The first release of a new ďYarra Valley rangeĒ out of Giant Steps. Hand picked, wild yeast, no fining or filtration. The winemaking doesnít sound compromised, and nor does the shape and flavour of the wine in the mouth. Itís sour-sweet in a positive way, ripped with dry herbs and cherry-plum, with cranberry and crushed dry spice notes aplenty. Itís succulent, itís tangy, itís spicy and yet itís firm and strong. It speaks of a top-notch vintage, and producer."

Giant Steps 'Sexton Vineyard' Chardonnay 2015

Australia

"A complex, multi-message bouquet hinting of the (relative) richness of the palate; unashamedly lower Yarra Valley with layers of grapefruit and white peach flesh and skin." 95 points James Halliday
"The Sexton chardonnay vineyard was planted in 1997. Itís at Gruyere in the lower valley. It turns out terrific chardonnay.
This is rich, fine, seamless, quartz-like. Itís complex in an integrated way; no bells, whistles or alarms but plenty going on regardless. Grapefruit and white peach, spent matches buried into the fruit, a smoky mineralogy. It turns the power on but is long and gorgeous Ė and itíll be better again in 12-24 months." 95+ points Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

Giant Steps 'Sexton Vineyard' Pinot Noir 2015

Australia

"The most cerebral, layered, spicy and complex of the 2015 Giant Steps single-vineyard wines, this has a handy mix of savoury and sweet aromas. There are cloves, chalky/stony smells, saffron and a swirling array of rose-like fragrances. It's really engaging and gently herbal, opening up into warmed, peppery spices and some musky florals, too. The palate is cut with finesse and detail and is really engaging and structurally complex for a pinot. The tannins strike the gentlest of grainy textures through fine pastry-like layers of fruit. Meanwhile, hints of blood-orange flavours meet crunchy red cherries and wild raspberries. Elegant yet powerful. Superb ó their best to date. Delicious enough to drink now, but you'd be mad not to give it 5+ years. There is much to come!" 97 points Nick Stock, James Suckling Top 100 Australian Wines 2016 #8
96 pts The Wine Front
"Naturally, shares the superb colour of its siblings; here generosity takes the stage with richness and tannins woven into the superabundant red and black fruits by invisible mending. A brilliant wine by whatever standards you may choose, the lower Yarra Valley refusing to take a backwards step."

Giant Steps 'Lusatia Park' Chardonnay 2015

Australia

"Weíre all familiar with the produce of the Lusatia Park vineyard (now owned by De Bortoli). It was planted in 1985 and sits at 220 metres in the Hoddles Creek area of the valley. Here we have Lusatia Park Chardonnay at the hands of Giant Steps.
This wine sings. It hooks you straight off. Yes it tastes of white peach, crunchy apple, pear and grapefruit, and there might even be spots of honey and pineapple. But the main impression is the way it draws you straight in and keeps you under its spell long after youíve swallowed. It really quite something. Sweet bran and assorted flashes of spice are part and parcel of a sensational offering. As indeed are long lines of cleansing/mouthwatering acidity." 96 points Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

Giant Steps 'Lusatia Park' Pinot Noir 2015

Australia

" Iíll stand behind the 2015 pinot noirs being exceptional, with none better than others. Just one of those rare things. Such a superb suite of wines. Lusatia Park Vineyard is located in Woori Yallock in the Yarra, planted in 1985, and known for its elevated, north-facing orientation, and close-planted vines.

Of the Giant Steps 2015 single vineyard pinot noirs this feels like the one with a touch more grunt, a little wild streak, sniffs of ferrous things in dark cherry, kirsch, briar. Deeply flavoured and then as the finish starts it kicks in with another burst of bright fruit Ė itís like the wine is bucking in the palate, yet set on impossibly supple curves. Floods the palate with cherry fruit, spice, herb, pomegranate acidity and barely there tannin. Unreal wine. Unreal. " 96 pts Mike Bennie The Wine Front

Giant Steps `Tarraford Vineyard` Chardonnay 2015

Australia

"This is the restrained one. The seamless one. It is quite monumentally gorgeous. It just gets everything right, and adds a few flourishes for good measure. It tastes of ginger and custard apples, (subtle) struck match and a complex arrange of stone fruits. Itís one of those wines, though, where it feels churlish to pinpoint the flavours; itís elegant, seductive and long, and thereís very little more you can request." 96 points Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

Giant Steps 'Applejack' Pinot Noir 2015

Australia

"Phil Sextonís Applejack vineyard is in the upper reaches of the Yarra Valley and set at decent elevation. A cool site..60% of the ferment was whole bunch. It was hand-picked and naturally fermented and sent to bottle without filtration after 11 months in 75% old barrels. What a killer line-up from Giant Steps in 2015. I simply canít split them, if that was my task.

Telltale signs of cool places and whole bunch ferment, whiffs of garrigue, bouquet garni, so letís say dried hedges and dried mixed herbs, in Australian lingo. Thereís dark cherry, a faint sniff of cola, fennel, pepper too. The palate is awash and ablaze, bright and lively, shows a flighty sheet of tannin that drapes across the mouth then starts to tug like a fist closing on silk. The finish is pulled tight with that fine tannin, caraway seed spice, light herbal notes. Itís beautiful, wonderful drinking, so gluggable, so complex in its nature and presentation, so much to enjoy. " 96 points Mike Bennie The Wine Front

Giant Steps 'Primavera' Pinot Noir 2015

Australia

"This has an expansive mood to it, whereby aromas float out in a stream of rich blue-tinged fruits together with gentle spices, rosehip and blood oranges. There are some more flinty, chalky and savoury aromas, too. Here's a very seductive pinot that gets you lingering in the glass. The palate has a layered and smooth style to it, offering up lots of velvety and fine tannins that flow in waves, folding one after the other through the finish. Plenty of ripe dark-cherry and plum flavours plus hints of espresso and chocolate. This is a class act. Drink now and for 8+ years. This is from a site in the Hoddles Creek area of the Upper Yarra." 97 points Nick Stock, James Sucklings Top 100 Australian Wines 2016. 96 pts James Halliday, 96 pts The Wine Front
