Porseleinberg Syrah 2016 Offer

Porseleinberg is a property owned by Boekenhoutskloof and we have just received news on the release of the 2016 Syrah release date and information. This unique wine from the Swartland has shown remarkable consistency, with the 2015 garnishing remarkable scores such as 94 from Wine Spectator, 96 from the Wine Advocate, and 97 from Tim Atkin MW. Only a very small amount is produced and consequently only about 600 bottles are available for the UK.

The horrific drought that started in 2016 has led to outstanding concentration in some of the 2016 wines from the Swartland. The beautiful floral notes and pepper spice of the 2016 is backed with the most refined and elegant tannins that I have tasted on the Porseleinberg at this early stage of its development. Rich, yet elegant; powerful, yet refined; exotic, and complex. In my opinion the wine is a tad more approachable at this young age, but will drink well for the next 3 decades, if you have the patience. This is another exquisite effort from one of Swartlands favourite sons Callie Louw.

Tasting Notes & Technical Sheet

On the back of the driest winter in decades a very small crop of 2-3t/ha was the result. The growing season was warm and dry, putting more pressure on the moisture levels of the soils. The small crop was clean and ripened very quickly.

Harvest started early, end Jan, and was done by mid Feb. Grapes were hand-picked and transferred to concrete tanks whole bunch. The bunches were foot stomped where after natural fermentation took place.

During the ferment 2 pump overs were given per day until the fermentation was complete. Maturation took place over 12 months in 70% wood(foudre) & 30% concrete egg. Bottling was done early March 2017.

Alc. 14% R.S. 2g/l ph 3.9 T.A. 5g/l

Ripest vintage thus far. Showing more dark and black fruit. The normal pure edgy tannin seems a bit more relaxed. Very good mid palate weight with more fruit than spice. Long sweet fruited finish.

Very good indication of the growing conditions and the vintage which will definitely evolve very well with time in bottle.
