Magpie Estate 'The Beak' Shiraz-Grenache 2014

Australia

The latest release of our best selling red wine.
It's a slight departure this year. A blend of 62 % Shiraz, 25% Grenache and 13% Sangiovese. The Sangiovese being a new part of the blend. We bought a parcel of Sangiovese and whilst it made a decent wine on its own we liked it more as a blending component.
As ever the Shiraz and Grenache are from several growers.
Bright red cherry with a hint of plum and spice on the nose.
Really juicy and vibrant with red and black fruits a touch of herb, spice, and creamy oak. Maybe a lighter expression than some previous Beak reds but maybe the most fruit forward and drinkable yet.
Hugely versatile food wise and an easy drink on its own .

Magpie Estate 'The Call Bag' 20th Anniversary Mourvedre Grenache 2013

Australia

1993 was the first release of this wine. 20 years later and we made a special small, just 2 barrel release to honour this. Coming primarily from our Clovella vineyard which is Mourvedre dominant, we blended in a small amount of Mourvedre and Grenache from 2 other vineyards, aged in 2 year old French oak puncheons.
Classic Magpie and classic Mourvedre nose, clove, cinnamon, meaty notes, black cherry, Asian spices too.
Lovely intense sweet black fruits, loads of spice, again quite meaty pan reduction flavours with black cherry, cinnamon and clove with pepper and oak on the finish. Good acidity keeps it fresh. Lovely now and sure to age over the next 3-5 years at least.
The last release under this label.

Magpie Estate 'The Malcolm' Shiraz 2012

Australia

The 2012 Malcolm was made using fruit from six rows in a low yielding vineyard in the Western Ridge sub region of the Barossa Valley. The vines were cluster thinned for maximum flavour intensity and the fruit was left to hang longer than is typical for fruit used in other Magpie Estate wines. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 10 months in new American oak puncheons, and then racked into new French oak puncheons for the final
15 months of maturation. At blending we added the best barrel of the vintage from all our other Shiraz, and this has given thewine extra depth.
Very black in the glass. The nose offers up super ripe fruit aromas of black cherry, cassis and plum, alongside toasty mocha oak, meat, liquorice and spice. Rich and textured with a velvety palate. This is a rich and powerful, hedonistic Barossa Shiraz with great complexity and super-ripe tannins. The 2012 is in the vein of the slightly more elegant style of recent releases. This
is still very rich, and ripe Shiraz, and shows the depth of fruit and power of the 2012 vintage, but not in an over the top way.
Voluptuous and drinkable now, although the wine obviously has many years ahead of it. At a fairly recent vertical tasting going back to the 1994, all wines were still drinking, all apart from the 1994 were either in their prime or still young.
The Malcolm Shiraz is only released in the finest vintages to ensure the quality standard is maintained, and the reputation for capturing the true essence of Barossa Shiraz upheld. First since 2010, next release will be the 2017!
135 dozen produced.

2016 was a really good vintage. . The wine has lovely black cherry, ripe plum, hints of cassis with spice on the nose, some creamy oak and a hint of chocolate.
Juicy and opulent on the palate- black cherry, plum and blackcurrant with some hints of red berry fruit too, subtle notes of liquorice and black pepper with some creamy oak. Tannins are ripe. It's a medium bodied style of Sack which is drinking well now and over the next 5-7 years.

Magpie Estate 'The Selfie Stick' Dry Muscat 2017

Australia

Rolf's sister Christa makes the white wines. Whilst over blending in 2016 I tasted a barrel of wine that was part of a blend for a client. It was a dry Muscat that blew me away, I loved it's vivacity and grapey freshness. So much so that I contacted the grower and immediately put an order in for 4-5 tonnes of grapes from the next vintage, and here is the result!
The Muscat grapes come from the famous Terra Ricca Farms in the Riverland, known for their quality fruit.
100% Muscat partly fermented and aged in tank. Partly in old oak. We blended the two together.
This is classic, dry, aromatic Muscat.
Floral, grapey, white peach, jasmine and honeysuckle on an evocative nose.
Crisp, and fresh, bursting with grapey characters, ripe pear and lime zest on the finish, just a hint of spice. Very refreshing and sure to go well with lightly spiced Asian and Asian influenced dishes.

Magpie Estate 'The Wit and Shanker' Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Australia

Back in stock, this Christmas and winter best seller, is in plentiful supply and with a great case price!

Great drinking 100% Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon with each release being a tribute to a nameless legend of the Barossa.
Deep in colour with lovely perfumed cassis on the nose, blackcurrant and some subtle oak too. Itís rich yet elegant, nothing green and nothing tarry. Lovely fresh cassis fruit-really juicy with integrated creamy oak on the palate. Sweet and lively with great length, aged mostly in new French oak with just a touch of new American oak adding complexity.
Drink now and over the next 5-7 years.
