Shafer 'Red Shoulder Ranch' Chardonnay 2015

100% Chardonnay from their vineyard in Carneros. The grapes are whole-cluster pressed and fermented with wild yeast in barrels for 14 months; 75% new Allier and Vosges, 25% stainless steel. Malolactic fermentation is arrested. The warm, dry 2015 vintage gave smaller Chardonnay berries, leading to a wine with excellent acidity and structure, brimming with rich, ripe aromas and flavours.

Shafer 'TD-9' Merlot 2015

TD-9 represents an evolution of Shafer Vineyards Merlot, which has been a cornerstone of their range for 30 years. The full story, evoking the great, American pioneering spirit, which led to the founding of Shafer Vineyards, is attached. From a wine perspective, the naissance of TD-9 was an early morning conversation during the 2015 harvest when Doug Shafer and long-standing winemaker, Elias Fernandez, were discussing the Merlot and other fruit from a cluster of small Shafer vineyards just south of Stags Leap District. “You do realise that we could make a much better wine if we could make a red blend” suggested Elias – referring to the mix of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec fruit on the property. They slept on the idea and soon decided that if they could make a more profound wine, the way forward was clear. As anticipated, TD-9 was indeed finer and more complex than previously, whilst retaining the joyous, plush, generous fruit which characterized their varietal Merlot.

56% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Malbec from Stags Leap District, Yountville and a vineyard in the Vaca Mountains, just south of Stags Leap District. Aged for 20 months in a combination of Allier and Troncais barrels (100% new). 2015 was another in a string of warm, sunny vintages from spring through to early autumn. “Vibrant, complex aromas of ripe red and black fruit, lavender and herbs fill the glass, followed by pure, energetic flavours of dried cherry, blackberry, strawberry, licorice and cocoa all pull together with wet slate minerality, clean acidity and the ripe, seamless tannins are a hallmark of this vintage” Elias Fernandez, Winemaker.

Shafer 'Hillside Select' Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

"The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select will probably hit the magic three-digit score, but it is a more backward style of wine, although probably even more concentrated than the 2012, and that’s saying something. Fabulous potential of 30-50 years is evident in this profound bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon that is inky blue/black to the rim and offers up notes of charcoal embers, scorched earth, blackberries, cassis, blueberries, a hint of coffee, and background barrique smells. Massively concentrated but incredibly elegant and poised, this is a wine of great energy and vibrancy. It is fabulously deep, built like a skyscraper, and set for an incredibly long life. Try not to consume a bottle for at least another 4-5 years and then watch the magic unfold." 98+ Robert Parker

For many years Hillside Select has been one of California’s greatest red wines. It is produced from carefully selected blocks surrounding the winery (The Sunspot, John's Upper Seven, Venado Illegal & Firebreak) exclusively in the Stags Leap District. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, matured for 32 months in 100% new Alliers and Troncais barrels. 2013 was an ideal vintage that served up nothing but warm, sun-soaked days and perfect, chilly nights from spring through to early autumn. The consistency of heat and coolness created a growing season where the fruit was harvested with delicious ripeness, bursting with rich colour and flavour.

“The 2013 Hillside Select is a rich, expansive wine balanced by liveliness and energetic aromas and flavours. The vintage is a liquid feast of black cherry, dark chocolate, briar fruit, black tea, cola, blackberry, tobacco and a touch of aromatic herbs. All this abundance comes wrapped in slate minerality while wearing its Stags Leap District tannins with silky ease.” Elias Fernandez, Winemaker.
