Wines in the Press Winter/Spring 2018

A feature highlighting wines that we stock that have been written up (favourably!) in the Press. All the wines are offered by the case at a discounted rate.

Blank Canvas Sauvignon Blanc 2017

New Zealand

Well know NZ winemaker Matt Thompson has finally released some wines under his own label. After years of making wine for other people, it's fair to say Matt know his way around. All his initial releases have had much acclaim.
This single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from the Holdaway vineyard at Dillons Point – Matt Thompson’s favourite sub-region for this variety.
A classic expression of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc but one which offers complexity of texture and a mineral drive reminiscent of river stones and sea spray. Blackcurrant, guava and passionfruit aromas emerge alongside subtle hints of lemongrass. On the palate, it is focused and vibrant while remaining elegantly balanced.

Boulevard Napoléon 'Le Pal' Vin de Pays de l'Herault Grenache Gris 2015

France

Delicious, quite powerful and spicy white, rich and creamy with fabulous acidity making it really complex and balanced.
Jancis Robinson MW Wine of The Week 9th Feb 2018
"This is one of those magic, high-tension dry whites from the hills of the Languedoc-Roussillon....The vines that supply the fruit for this wine, of which only a few hundred cases a year are made, are 70 or 80 years old, some of the oldest in the region, and grow in a clay-limestone vineyard known as Le Pal in Minervois-La Livinière...
It's planted with both Grenache Gris and Grenache Noir, the Noir being picked two weeks later than the Gris. This wine doesn't qualify as AOC Minervois because it is made from a single variety and, amazingly, Grenache Gris (unlike Grenache Blanc) is not one of the many grapes allowed in white Minervois. So it is sold as a Vin de Pays de l'Hérault.

The grapes are – of course – hand picked in late September, whole-bunch pressed and the first press juice is fermented in one- and two-year-old barrels. The wine is aged on the lees afterwards for a year à la Bourgogne and is bottled a year after the harvest after a light filtration but no fining.... There is no malolactic conversion, not least because malic acid levels are so low. Oh, and the alcoholic strength is usually 14.5% but it's not at all heavy. Serve it as you would a white burgundy.

The acidity may look low but this is a full-bodied dry white that doesn't seem remotely flabby but has massive citrus and stone tension and drive, all of it over a satisfyingly creamy texture. In my experience there is no hurry at all to drink it. I've tasted all vintages from 2011, which I have tasted every year from 2014, revising my drinking dates forward each time. When I last tasted the 2011 in August 2016, I thought it should last until this year.
I found the 2012 a bit fat and the 2014 very slightly lighter than some (compared with the intensity of other vintages) but the 2013 and 2015 (just released) are stunning, and should enjoy a long life

Campogiovanni Brunello di Montalcino 2012

Italy

Outstanding 95-97 points Decanter November 2017
"Set up by Agricola San Felice in 1980, located on the southwestern edges of the appellation, a 65 hectare estate, where 20 hectares are used for wine production. The terroir is a mix of soils: calcareous, clay and alluvial, creating a balance of power, softness and elegance. They age the wine for 3 years in Slavonian oak casks and 500-litre tonneaux. BB: Complex cigar-box aromas accompanied by notes of morello cherries, wet stones and mediterranean herbs. Fairly developed palate of sweet black fruit ferried by big, firm tannins to a long, clean finish. MG: Warm and edgy, charred spice and menthol nose, followed by a full, ripe and juicy palate with concentrated, black pepper-tinged raspberry fruit. SH: An immediately appealing, enticing nose of cherry fruit and sweet-spice. Love the balance and harmony here, if being a slightly lighter style overall. "

Coriole Nero 2016

Australia

"Coriole has long championed Italian grape varieties with nero d'Avola turning into one of its stars. Why? It's suited to the region's warm, dry climes. This is a beauty with a core of juicy red fruits, especially raspberry, with a whisper of Mediterranean dried herbs, supple tannins, a lighter frame and a neat acid line keeping it so damn lively. F X Pichler 'Dürnsteiner Kellerberg' Riesling Smaragd 2016

Austria

"An amazingly concentrated dry Riesling that somehow manages to be extraordinarily light-footed. There's a super-wide spectrum of aromas from parsley through lemon grass, with ripe white peach, mandarin orange and white chocolate in between. The breath-taking balance is more important than all of this, extending right through the incredibly long, lingering finish. 100 points #7 in James Suckling's Top 100 Wines of The Year 2017

Giant Steps 'Primavera' Pinot Noir 2016

Australia

This fabulous Pinot Noir has had some amazing press culminating in several Trophies including Best Wine of Show at last weeks prestigious Yarra Valley Wine Show. Plus many high scores from the worlds leading wine critics. I tried this wine last week and its really elegant and classy, really quite Burgundian in style, with just a hint of new world sweetness. Cool climate Australian Pinot at its best, yet enough fruit, and gentle spice with integrated delicate oak to make you sit up and take notice. Drink 2018-2030

Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2012

Italy

"Il Poggione is a Brunello superstar and a vintage like this reveals every reason why that affirmation is true. From the second the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino pours into the glass, you know you are in for something special. The wine is darkly saturated and rich in appearance. Absent are those slightly amber or browning hues you often get with Sangiovese in a hot vintage. Nor does the wine show flat or tired characteristics. Instead, the quality of fruit is vibrant and rich. This is a healthy, generous and exuberant Brunello with dark density and succulent fruit flavours that are followed by integrated spice and tobacco. The balance is impressive and one thing you get here is fresh acidity. This is not to be underestimated, because the acidity quota in the 2012 vintage across the appellation is not as high or evident as usual. This is one of the year's best Brunellos." 95+ Monica Larner Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Santenay 'Les Charmes' Domaine Olivier 2015

France

Decanter Value Burgundy Tasting - Top Rated Wine 96 points!
It really is an exceptional wine. I tried it recently and found it to be delicious already, lovely sweet fruit with a roasted meat savoury character. Sure to age well too, but very approachable and great with food.

Decanter average score: 96/100pts Individual judges' scores: Jason Haynes 96 Andy Howard MW 96 Jasper Morris MW 96

It is now 10 years since Antoine and Rachel Olivier made the move from
Santenay-le-Haut to Vincent Girardin's old premises down the road in Santenay-le-Bas. This has afforded them more space in the cellar and more freedom over when to bottle. The estate has been certified organic since 2011. Les Charmes comes from the southern part of the commune, just below the premier cru Clos Rousseau, rich in marl and clay. Some whole clusters are always added to the fermentation vat.

Jason Haynes Mix of fruits, fairly savoury and clean, nice length, stylish and very well balanced.

Andy Howard MW Savoury, leafy notes on nose and palate. Some slightly sour red cherry and strawberry on the palate, crisp acidity,
good purity, some extra tannin structure. Depth and concentration.

Jasper Morris MW Medium-deep colour, with whole-bunch
fermentation notes making for a complex if as yet inaccessible nose. It all starts to come together in the glass, offering density, vivacity, purity and length. Then it grows and grows into a glorious yet perfectly balanced wine with delicacy, pure fruit and amazing persistence.
