Blank Canvas Marlborough Pinot Noir 2015

New Zealand

Just rated 97 points and top Marlborough Pinot Noir 2015 1/112! by Bob Campbell MW (one of New Zealand's most respected wine journalists)
"From a low-yielding vineyard in the Waihopi Valley with clay-based soils and 17 year old vines. 50% whole-bunches in the fermentation. Evocatively perfumed wine with savoury, fresh herb, violet, red rose, cherry and berry flavours supported by classy spicy oak. Dense and seamless with an impressively lengthy finish. Delicious wine. 22/2/18 drink 2018 to 2023"
We love these wines - the own project of long term NYW friend Matt Thomson. The debut 2014 was fabulous and hugely popular and this is a very worthy follow up, that may be even better.

Blank Canvas Sauvignon Blanc 2017

New Zealand

Well know NZ winemaker Matt Thompson has finally released some wines under his own label. After years of making wine for other people, it's fair to say Matt know his way around. All his initial releases have had much acclaim.
This single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from the Holdaway vineyard at Dillons Point – Matt Thompson’s favourite sub-region for this variety.
A classic expression of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc but one which offers complexity of texture and a mineral drive reminiscent of river stones and sea spray. Blackcurrant, guava and passionfruit aromas emerge alongside subtle hints of lemongrass. On the palate, it is focused and vibrant while remaining elegantly balanced.

Bodegas Vinatigo Tenerife Vijariego Blanco 2016

Spain

Jancis Robinson MW Wine of the Week 16th March 2018
"My immediate impression of the Vijariego Blanco was 'it's a less lemony Assyrtiko'. It had the same bracing acidity as the Greek variety and was similarly zesty, tangy and saline. It actually tastes as though it were grown by the sea. Like Assyrtiko, Vijariego Blanco retains acidity despite sky-high temperatures, without developing sky-high alcohol (although this wine is still 13.5%). It was deliciously rich in flavour and exceedingly thirst-quenching. In a word, yum.

The vineyards lie at varying elevations on sloping volcanic soils, low in fertility and well-draining – perfect for viticulture. Grapes are hand-picked and re-sorted at the gravity-fed winery that is naturally cooled by its stone walls. Winemaking is cool and reductive – apparently so reductive that no added sulphur is required for the prevention of oxidation – 'natural' wine lovers take note. The wine is fermented in French oak for six months, with some lees stirring, then spends a few months in stainless-steel tanks before settling and bottling.

On the label, the rungs of the ladder represent the terraced vineyards that ascend the slopes of Tenerife's Teide volcano towards el mar de nube, the Magic-Faraway-Tree-esque sea of clouds that float in from the Azores and sit atop the Teide, keeping the south of the island so much drier than the north.

The great vine killer phylloxera – which wiped out so many of the vines of Europe in the 19th century, forcing a replanting of whatever was most popular or economic at the time – never hit the Canary Islands, presumably due to both its isolation and the phylloxera-unfriendly volcanic soils. As such, the islands are a veritable gold mine of old vines of ancient, unique grape varieties.

Viñátigo's passionate and pioneering director Juan Jesús Méndez Siverio – also known as 'Dr Grape' – has been working tirelessly since the mid 1990s to identify and revive production of these ancient grape varieties of Tenerife. In collaboration with a number of universities and research institutes too lengthy to list, he has thus far identified 82 (!) grape varieties and how best to grow and vinify each. Many of these long-forgotten varieties have since been planted at Viñátigo and produce varietal wines such as this Vijariego Blanco."

Boulevard Napoléon 'Le Pal' Vin de Pays de l'Herault Grenache Gris 2015

France

Delicious, quite powerful and spicy white, rich and creamy with fabulous acidity making it really complex and balanced.
Jancis Robinson MW Wine of The Week 9th Feb 2018
"This is one of those magic, high-tension dry whites from the hills of the Languedoc-Roussillon....The vines that supply the fruit for this wine, of which only a few hundred cases a year are made, are 70 or 80 years old, some of the oldest in the region, and grow in a clay-limestone vineyard known as Le Pal in Minervois-La Livinière...
It's planted with both Grenache Gris and Grenache Noir, the Noir being picked two weeks later than the Gris. This wine doesn't qualify as AOC Minervois because it is made from a single variety and, amazingly, Grenache Gris (unlike Grenache Blanc) is not one of the many grapes allowed in white Minervois. So it is sold as a Vin de Pays de l'Hérault.

The grapes are – of course – hand picked in late September, whole-bunch pressed and the first press juice is fermented in one- and two-year-old barrels. The wine is aged on the lees afterwards for a year à la Bourgogne and is bottled a year after the harvest after a light filtration but no fining.... There is no malolactic conversion, not least because malic acid levels are so low. Oh, and the alcoholic strength is usually 14.5% but it's not at all heavy. Serve it as you would a white burgundy.

The acidity may look low but this is a full-bodied dry white that doesn't seem remotely flabby but has massive citrus and stone tension and drive, all of it over a satisfyingly creamy texture. In my experience there is no hurry at all to drink it. I've tasted all vintages from 2011, which I have tasted every year from 2014, revising my drinking dates forward each time. When I last tasted the 2011 in August 2016, I thought it should last until this year.
I found the 2012 a bit fat and the 2014 very slightly lighter than some (compared with the intensity of other vintages) but the 2013 and 2015 (just released) are stunning, and should enjoy a long life

Boutinot Cairanne 'Les Six' 2015

France

“Made with six different varieties - nothing compared with Châteuneuf-du-Pape's 14, but still quite a large number - this is a superb, modern, Grenache-dominated Cairanne, which carries its comparatlvely high alcohol lightly, thanks to the structure and acidity of the 2015 vintage. Spicy tapenade and wild herb aromas segue into a smooth, deftly oaked palate with very fine tannins and a core of sweet, tarry blackberry and blueberry fruit. Outstanding value.”– Tim Atkin. 93 points Wine of The Week 19th March 2018

'Les Six' is a blend of six grape varieties, co-fermented together in pairs to show how the rare and ancient varietiesof Carignan Noir, Cinsault and Counoise can enhance the more popular southern Rhône varieties of Grenache Noir, Syrah and Mourvèdre. The wine is vinified (using traditional methods in) and matured in tronconique (6,0000 litre oak vats) for up to twelve months in the Cairanne cellars of Domaine Boutinot Rhône.

"Coriole has long championed Italian grape varieties with nero d'Avola turning into one of its stars. Why? It's suited to the region's warm, dry climes. This is a beauty with a core of juicy red fruits, especially raspberry, with a whisper of Mediterranean dried herbs, supple tannins, a lighter frame and a neat acid line keeping it so damn lively. "An amazingly concentrated dry Riesling that somehow manages to be extraordinarily light-footed. There's a super-wide spectrum of aromas from parsley through lemon grass, with ripe white peach, mandarin orange and white chocolate in between. Gaia 'Thalassitis' Assyrtiko 2017

Greece

"The 2017 Thalassitis is an unoaked Assyrtiko coming in at 13% alcohol. This is a bottling I usually prize for its freshness, elegance and lively demeanor. This year, one in which the wines could have a lot of concentration if you could avoid heat spikes, it has all of those things still, but it seems to lean to a deeper style instead of an exhilarating one. Overall, it finishes with a big hit of fruit, nicely supported by its acidity. On the first day tasted, it was a bit stolid. The next day, it reminded me of Thalassitis again—big acidity slicing and dicing that fruit, even in a year when it seems very dense and ripe. The score went up notably. The gripping and tense finish, by the way, seems endless. This does lack its usual finesse, so we'll see where it goes when it unfolds. This does have some things to prove in the cellar. In the new Santorini Assyrtiko trend, it is no longer acceptable to make wines that just drink well for five years, at least not if you want to be at the top of your game. It mostly seems pretty super, and it is worth leaning up right now." 95 pts Mark Squires Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Peter Lehmann 'Wigan' Riesling 2012

Peter Lehmann 'Wigan' Riesling 2012

Australia

96 points Decanter March 2018
Vineyards Known for producing truly world class Riesling, the soils of the Eden Valley are shallow and rocky. The fruit for this wine comes from the William Hurn - Ross' Block single vineyard.
Vintage 2012 was an outstanding vintage. The weather was mild throughout the year; cool nights allowed a gentle, slow ripening which produced white wines of great fruit definition.
Vinification The grapes were picked early and fermented cold in stainless steel for two weeks before clarification. Bottling took place immediately, then the wine was cellared at the winery for five years prior to release.
Tasting Notes The 2012 'Wigan' Riesling is delicate in colour with a green tinge, and a soft aroma of lime cordial combined with toasty characters. The palate shows great fruit purity with a fresh, crisp, dry finish. This is one of the classic Wigan Rieslings from an exceptional vintage, one for the ages.
