Wines in the Press Autumn 2017

A feature highlighting wines that we stock that have been written up (favourably!) in the Press. All the wines are offered by the case at a discounted rate.

Argiano Brunello di Montalcino 2012

Italy

"The Argiano 2012 Brunello di Montalcino does a great job of interpreting the vintage and of showcasing its special microclimate on the southern flank of the Montalcino appellation. Both these elements point to warm-climate Sangiovese. and Argiano accepts that challenge with creativity and expertise. This is a proud expression of the grape with thick texture, determination and a succulent approach. Aromas of dark cherry, moist earth, tobacco and grilled herb lift from the bouquet. Bright acidity marks the close. The wine still carries its baby fat and needs a few more years of cellar aging in order to fully express itself." 94+ Monica Larner Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Bodega Mustiguillo 'Mestizaje Blanco' 2016

Spain

A fabulous wine from Mustiguillo. This has been a favourite wine on holidays to Nerja!
From a mountain vineyard 900 metres above sea level. Organic and pretty much a natural wine. Made from the local but rare grape variety Merseguera 64%, 24% Viognier and 11% Malvasia. Grapes are hand harvested and vinified in stainless steel tanks separately.
Lovely perfumed nose. Floral with peach, lime and grapey notes.
Crisp and dry, quite full flavoured- stone fruits, a touch of spice too. Weighty and fresh with bags of character.
Jancis Robinson M.W Wine of the Week 4/8/2017
"Isn't it amazing that this wine, made substantially from a grape variety of which more than 90% has been grubbed up over the past 25 years thanks to EU subsidies, is now available not just in its homeland Spain but also in the UK, Belgium, Germany, Austria and Denmark?...
We dismiss the grape in question, Merseguera, as 'uninspiring' in Wine Grapes but I think any new edition would have to take account of the commitment of Toni Sarrión of Mustiguillo, who seems to have found the perfect spot for it, at 900 m (2,950 ft) elevation in the mountains 80 km (50 miles) inland from Valencia on the Mediterranean coast....
A blend of 65% Merseguera, 24% Viognier and 11% Malvasia, caught my eye for value.... Presumably it is the inclusion of Viognier that precludes any more precise appellation than Vino de España, but despite that French grape's strong personality, it does not dominate the blend. (Mestizaje, by the way, is Spanish for miscegenation.)

The 2016 vintage is the organically grown product of the driest summer since records began in the Valencia region but doesn't taste stressed or as though there was a lack of juice in the grapes. This unoaked wine, which apparently is always made up of at least 50% of fruit from the Finca Calvestra vineyard.. is certainly big, broad and spicy but is enlivened by quite enough acidity. Aged on the lees, it was bottled in February. I found it seriously intriguing and unusual with real tension and interest. There is much complexity and depth here – particularly for a wine that sells for less than £14".

Bodegas Roda Rioja Reserva 2012

Spain

"Very fresh, deep black fruit and licorice character. Rich and complex, but also very lively for its age. The refined tannins are beautifully integrated and drive the long, complex finish. Delicious now." 95 pts James Suckling July 2017

This is a simply delicious, silky, beguiling Rioja that I absolutely love.
89%Tempranillo, 9% Graciano and 2% Garnacha. Aged in French oak.
It's young but so lovely now! Dense black berry fruits, roasted meats and chocolate on the nose.
Similar on the palate add in some liquorice, spice and toasty, creamy oak. It's rich, savoury, textural and long. Great with steak tonight. I am sure it will improve over the next 3-5 years and drink for a decade or more, but I, as you may have guessed quite like it now!!

Coriole Nero 2016

Australia

"Coriole has long championed Italian grape varieties with nero d'Avola turning into one of its stars. Why? It's suited to the region's warm, dry climes. This is a beauty with a core of juicy red fruits, especially raspberry, with a whisper of Mediterranean dried herbs, supple tannins, a lighter frame and a neat acid line keeping it so damn lively. Eulogio Pomares Parcelarios Carralcoba Albariño Albariño 2015

Spain

A really limited production from the Zarate winemaker. It's quite something. 36 bottles left at time of writing.
" This beautifully packaged wine was fermented and aged in chestnut foudres of 1200 litres, and it’s quite thrilling. The grapes come from seventy year old vines in Castrelo-Cambados. This is brilliantly complex with some apple, lemon and pear notes on the nose, and a really taut, lemony palate with lovely texture as well as well integrated, bracing acidity, and a crystalline quality to the fruit. It flirts with oxidative characters, but manages them beautifully, and it’s just so long and mineral in the mouth. A profound example of Albariño. Stunning."96/100 Jamie Goode August 2017

Giant Steps 'Primavera' Pinot Noir 2016

Australia

This fabulous Pinot Noir has had some amazing press culminating in several Trophies including Best Wine of Show at last weeks prestigious Yarra Valley Wine Show. Plus many high scores from the worlds leading wine critics. I tried this wine last week and its really elegant and classy, really quite Burgundian in style, with just a hint of new world sweetness. Cool climate Australian Pinot at its best, yet enough fruit, and gentle spice with integrated delicate oak to make you sit up and take notice. Drink 2018-2030

Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2012

Italy

"Il Poggione is a Brunello superstar and a vintage like this reveals every reason why that affirmation is true. From the second the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino pours into the glass, you know you are in for something special. The wine is darkly saturated and rich in appearance. Absent are those slightly amber or browning hues you often get with Sangiovese in a hot vintage. Nor does the wine show flat or tired characteristics. Instead, the quality of fruit is vibrant and rich. This is a healthy, generous and exuberant Brunello with dark density and succulent fruit flavours that are followed by integrated spice and tobacco. The balance is impressive and one thing you get here is fresh acidity. This is not to be underestimated, because the acidity quota in the 2012 vintage across the appellation is not as high or evident as usual. This is one of the year's best Brunellos." 95+ Monica Larner Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Swartland Winery 'Winemakers Collection' Granite Rock Blend Red 2014

South Africa

A well priced and delicious blend. Like the white from Perdeberg in Swartland. 70% Mourvedre, 20% Carignan and 10% Grenache.
It's a characterful, bright, juicy red, no burnt characters here. Quite Cotes du Rhone like in style and really very appealing. Would work well with anything from Pizza to Pasta to red meat dishes.

House & Garden
WINE OF THE WEEK: Swartland Winemaker's Collection Granite Rock Blend 2014, Swartland, South Africa. August 17, 2017
Joanna Simon
"It can't be that there's more granite than there used to be in the world, so either more growers and winemakers are going in search of it or granite has become fashionable. Doubtless both, but chicken or egg? No matter. Either way, it's increasingly being used in wine names (see Wine of the Week a fortnight ago). In Swartland, one of the most dynamic and exciting of South African wine regions, the granite-rich soils are ideal for Rhône grape varieties and the Swartland Winery has come up with a Mourvèdre/Carignan/Grenache blend that's the Cape answer to a good Côtes du Rhône. And I mean a really good one – a mouthful of juicy, peppery, spiced-cherry and raspberry fruit with a rounded, chocolate-smooth texture and savoury stony-mineral freshness. If you're firing up the barbecue, look no further. As well as being a good partner for red meat, pork and duck, it goes well with vegetable dishes such as caponata and baked and roast vegetable dishes."

Tinpot Hut Sauvignon Blanc 2016

New Zealand

Stop Press just reviewed in Decanter New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc Tasting Voted #1 'Outstanding' 98 points!
"Tinpot Hut’s wines are made from owner and winemaker Fiona Turner’s own vineyards in Blind River and combined with grapes from other carefully selected sites in Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay.
This is a flinty, dry and textural wine. A concentrated and poised amalgamation of complexity and style, effortlessly pure and well composed with nice phenolics and crisp acidity. (Melanie Brown)
A broad Sauvignon Blanc with cut grass and subdued passion fruit flavours. This is quite a lively, energetic wine with a lengthy finish. (Bob Campbell MW)
Classic herbal, grassy and fruity bouquet with flavours of fresh lemon and grapefruit, then red apple and some tropical fruit; vibrant acidity, refreshing, balanced and well made with decent length. (Cameron Douglas MS)"

An Indian Summer in Marlborough ensured the 2016's are really successful.
This is made from grapes grown on Tinpot's own vineyards in the Blind River region and from the Dillon's Point vineyard in the lower Wairau Valley.
Grapefruit and elderflower with citrus, hints of lemongrass and herbs too on an aromatic nose.
Really crisp and fresh with blackcurrant and ripe citrus to the fore. Limey with grapefruit and hints of passion fruit too. Crisp acidity makes it clean and refreshing. Good intensity and a lovely purity to the wine.
It's another excellent Tinpot Hut Sauvignon and will not disappoint it's legion of fans.

Torres Reserva du Pueblo Pais 2014

Chile

"A supple, juicy Pinot Noir-like red with soft, sweet cherry and strawberry fruit spiked with ginger and orange zest. It’s made from the red País grape, which only a few years ago no self-respecting wine producer would have mentioned. Even the name (País: country) is, let’s say, understated. País isn’t exactly sought after today, but in Chile, where it’s still one of the most widespread varieties (grown for low-grade rosé), it’s being re-evaluated and nurtured by a handful of producers, not least the redoubtable Miguel Torres. And it deserves it – not least because of the current trend for lighter, fresher, more digestible reds. You can drink it on its own, especially served cool, but it’s good with food, including bresaola, roast, spiced root vegetables and Mediterranean veg, duck, pork, salmon and tuna. Not quite a rags to riches story yet, but certainly a rehabilitation one." Joanna Simon Wine of The Week 21/09/2017
