Luminous Hills & Seven of Hearts, Oregon Pinot Noir Pre Arrival Offer

I am really excited to be offering these stunning Pinot Noir's made by Byron Dooley.
As some of you may know we are founder members of a group of Independent Wine Merchants called the Vindependents, (now 30+ strong). I was on the buying panel for California and Oregon. We tasted through an ocean of really tedious samples, and like a belisha beacon we tasted the Luminous Hills and Seven of Hearts Pinot Noirs and all of us smiled immediately. These are superb wines, friendly wines, textural and complex yet with immediacy. I had seen the ratings of these wines on Antonio Galloni's website Vinous, he is ex Robert Parker and I find him and his reviewer's to be pretty reliable- often rating the smaller wineries and less showy styles. So I had requested samples were sent over. Thankfully they were everything I had hoped they would be!
We are shipping quite a range and expect these to be in end July. You can buy by the 6 pack (or more of course!) or some special mixed cases, at an advantageous pre arrival price. I cannot recommend these wines highly enough, a real mixture of Burgundy and New World Pinot. Having a savoury, almost meaty richness, yet supple tannins and perfumed fruit.
Byron Dooley studied at the University of Oregon in the Willamette Valley, after college he moved to California and was in the tech industry in Silicon Valley for several years, but got out at the time of the crash in 2000.
Having long had a real love for wine, he and his wife Dana's first foray was to buy a small vineyard in the Howell Mountain region in Napa. He did an internship at the renowned Williams & Selyem winery and they decided to go back to Oregon in 2004. He had researched and found the site he wanted - which is now called Luminous Hills. His first vintage was 2006, in the meantime Byron had established Seven of Hearts which is his label for grapes that are bought in from around Oregon, but also Washington State allowing small parcels of wines other than Pinot Noir to be made. Seven of Hearts is the tasting room for both labels and Dana's chocolate business!
The winemaking and philosophy is exactly the same for both Luminous Hills and Seven of Hearts,
"It is to produce fine wines that truly reflect their terroir – vintage, site, soil and clone.
We achieve this by not over manipulating. We use native yeast in our red wines, and whole cluster fermentation when appropriate to accentuate layers and complexity.
We work with fourteen to fifteen different vineyards in the Willamette and Columbia Valleys , farmed to our winemaker’s direction. Every vineyard, every vintage, requires different decisions. Our goal is to never make the same wine twice, by allowing the wines to reflect the unique qualities of each vintage’s time and place."
Please note these wines are due mid to late July 2017.

Seven of Hearts Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2015

Willamette Valley, Oregon
The introduction to the Seven of Hearts range and a fabulous value.
This is our ambassador, the first wine that most people encounter from us. It needs to say something about not only the places it is from, and the character of the vintage, but also it needs to say a little bit about our philosophy (genuine wines that are a reflection of the time and place they were grown). 2015 is a focused blend from the Luminous Hills Vineyard in Yamhill-Carlton, the Armstrong Vineyard in Ribbon Ridge and the Bjornson Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills. 896 cases produced. 13.6% alcohol. 25% new French Oak. From lots picked on five different dates in a span of two weeks.
I loved this wine- "We loved this wine at an Oregon Pinot tasting today, and looking at it again it really is a lovely, bright expression. This comes from a number of vineyards, several different clones, and aged in 25% new oak.
Perfumed nose with ripe raspberry, blackberry, spice and some toasty oak.
Juicy with lovely sweet fruit. Red and black berry fruit with crunchy tannins, lots of spice and integrated oak. Friendly, appealing style, top quality and very approachable.

Seven of Hearts Pinot Noir Bjornson Vineyard 2014

Eola Amity Hills, Willamette Valley, Oregon
25% whole cluster. 25% new oak.
When we first started working with the Bjornson Vineyard in the 2012 Vintage, we had an idea of what we were in for based on the quality of wines from the vineyards in its neighbourhood, but oh how it has exceeded our expectations. This third vintage for us showcases a highly diverse selection of clones including Wadenswil, Pommard, 115, 667, and 777 on a combination of volcanic Jory and Nekia, marrying for a delicious vivacious extroverted explosion of Pinot Noirness. 13.5% Alcohol.
"Brilliant red. Powerful aromas of ripe raspberry, cola, potpourri and wood smoke hint at musky herbs in the background. Seamless and broad on the palate, offering bitter cherry and red berry liqueur flavours and suggestions of cola and candied lavender. Fine-grained, slow-building tannins appear on a very long, spice-laced finish, which features lingering smoke and floral notes."

Seven of Hearts Pinot Noir Lia's Vineyard 2014

Chehalem Mountains, Willamette Valley, Oregon
100% destemmed, 25% new oak.
After a year in which we missed the Lia’s Vineyard, 2014 provided us the opportunity to again work with a favourite set of components from prior vintages: the voluptuous Pommard, spice rich 115, along with the endless depth of the rare 828 clone. This four-barrel blend exudes the delicate textured character that shines from the volcanic Jory soil at one of the most distinguished vineyards in the Willamette Valley. 14.2% Alcohol
"Lurid red. Pungent, deep-pitched aromas of black raspberry, cherry pit and candied flowers, accompanied by suggestions of white pepper and smoky minerals in the background. Appealingly sweet cherry and red berry flavours open up slowly with air, picking up a suave rose pastille flourish on the back half. Smoothly combines richness and vivacity and finishes smooth and long; gentle tannins add grip." 91 pts Josh Raynolds Vinous

Seven of Hearts Pinot Noir 'Special Reserve' 2014

Willamette Valley, Oregon
Stunning, textural, voluptuous complex Pinot this !
20% whole clusters, 40% new oak.

Our 2014 Special Reserve bottling is a selection of five special barrels that highlight the richness and power, depth and complexity of the vintage as drawn from several distinct Pinot Noir vineyards we worked with, including the Armstrong Vineyard in Ribbon Ridge, and the Bjornson Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills. This vintage was characterized by an early start, high enough temperatures to be the warmest vintage to date – although never extreme – with a perfect September finish. New Rousseau barrels from the Tronçais forest and the centre of France provide some wood tannin and sweetness to round out the bigger and more pronounced tannins of the vintage, coupled with a balance of successively older barrels to maintain the rich fruit, spice, and texture from a mix of classic and Dijon clones on the diverse and complementary soils of these two vineyard. 124 cases produced. 13.8% alcohol. 40% new French oak (Rousseau Tronçais and Allier).
"Limpid ruby-red. Sexy red berry preserve, incense and Asian spice aromas are complemented by suggestions of cola and vanilla. Sappy, smooth and penetrating on the palate, offering intense black raspberry, bitter cherry and spice-cake flavours that spread out and become sweeter as the wine opens up. Seamless and densely packed yet nervy, finishing with strong, spicy thrust and silky tannins that come in late." 93pts Josh Raynolds Vinous

Seven of Hearts Pinot Noir 'Very Special Reserve' 2014

Willamette Valley, Oregon
40% whole clusters, 40% new oak
The Very Special Reserve is a wine we only make in very special vintages (and 2014 was most certainly that!), and when we have particularly exquisite material in select lots from the vineyards we work with. With its early start, warm even season and brilliant September finish, 2014 was just that year and the Luminous Hills, Armstrong, Bjornson and Lia’s vineyards each brought highly distinctive elements to this wine that start with the finely woven array of red fruit and spices in the nose, broad texture and multi-dimensional flavors on the palate, and then that most prized of Pinot noir qualities: a silky, velvety, lengthy finish. 123 cases produced. 13.7% alcohol. French oak- (Remond Allier and Cadeau Allier).
"Brilliant ruby-red. A complex, intensely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and blue fruits, Asian spices and incense, and a sexy floral accent gains strength with air. Palate-staining black raspberry, boysenberry and cola flavours are lifted and given spine by a jolt of juicy acidity. Concentrated and powerful, but comes off lithe, featuring excellent focus, sweet, fruity persistence and velvety tannins that make a cameo appearance on the close." 94 pts Josh Raynolds Vinous
