Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montelcino 'Vecchie Vigne' 2011

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne is deep, powerful and explosive. The gravitas of the old vines and the blend of fruit that incorporates fruit from the southern end of the zone in equal parts with the north comes through loud and clear. Macerated cherries, smoke, spices, leather, licorice and French oak flesh out in a dense, stylish Brunello that captures the essence of the Pacenti house style. Drink this creamy, voluptuous Brunello over the next decade or so. 95pts" Antonio Galloni MW

"A very muscular red with plum, blueberry, walnut and dried mushroom character on both the nose and palate. Full and chewy. Fabulous fruit and intensity. Amazing quality for the vintage. Wow. Better in 2017." 97 pts James Suckling
The winery of Siro Pacenti, located on the northern slopes of Montalcino, is a leader in the production of Brunello di Montalicino, creating dense, powerful wines through the precise, able winemaking of owner Giancarlo Pacenti. Giancarlo is by far the leading exponent of the modern school of Brunello di Montalcino. He has succeeded in crafting award-winning wines of great textural beauty and refinement. Siro Pacenti is a 22 hectare estate split between two vineyards in the hills of Montalcino. The Pelagrilli vineyard is to the north of Montalcino and is composed of clay and sand. At 350m altitude, the continental winds cool the vines allowing for aromatic and elegant expressions of Sangiovese. To the south of Montalcino is the Piancornello vineyard where minerals, pebbles and rock dominate the soil. The microclimate is warmer here and produces wines with sweet rounded tannins, structure and power. As one would expect from an estate with such an eagle eye for detail, each vineyard is vinified separately in order to craft the most harmonious and representative expression of Brunello.

Along with the help of Bordeaux consultant Eric Boissenot, Giancarlo’s wines keep getting better and better. He is undoubtedly one of the most inquisitive, restless producers in Montalcino, and that comes through in his wines. Recently, he has moved towards an earlier blending of his wines with the goal of aging a complete blend rather than individual components. The wines spend two years in French oak barriques in a cold cellar with high humidity. 50% new oak for the Pelagrilli, 75-80% for the Vecchie Vigne and 100% for the PS Riserva. Incidentally, the Vecchie Vigne is the new name for the Brunello that has long been the Pacenti flagship before the newer Pelagrilli and PS bottlings were introduced.

Siro Pacenti offers a unique insight into truly refined, polished Brunellos from a star winemaker. Put simply, they are not to be missed.
