Magpie Estate

Magpie Estate 'The Mixed Thing' 2016

Australia

The latest and best incarnation of this wine.
A smorgasbord of varieties - these are picked together on a fruit day and vinified together. c25% Grenache, 13.5% Malbec, 13% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 12% Cinsault, 11.5% Riesling, 6.5% Carignan and 6.5% Mataro. About 30% were fermented as whole bunches, wild yeast ferment. We pressed off the skins early (less time on skins = less tannins) and the wine was aged in stainless steel. Bottled early to keep it's incredible juiciness to the fore!
Berry fruits on the nose, quite floral too. Juicy and bright, its absolutely at its best with a light chill. Fresh and pure and great on its own or with a variety of foods. Drink whilst youthful. Also worth noting that this wine is bottled with a low amount of sulphur.

Magpie Estate 'The Black Craft' Shiraz 2015

Australia

.Classic Barossa Shiraz with intense savoury flavours of thick blackberry compote, black pepper and typical iron-rich beefy flavours. Not a hint of jam here, no sweetness, this is serious shiraz for grown-ups with balanced acidity, fine velvety tannins and tremendous length

Magpie Estate 'The Call Bag' Mourvedre-Grenache 2012

Australia

The latest Call Bag.
This is our 'estate' wine if you like, and this is right in the zone of previous releases. Roughly 65% Grenache, 35% Mourvedre, the usual 22 months in oak, little new oak say 5-10% the balance in one year old French and older neutral American oak barrels.
Lovely fruitcake and spice nose, black cherry, clove, cinnamon, with a touch of oak. Really bright and juicy, mulled wine spices alongside the black cherry and plum fruit, a touch of creamy oak and ripe tannins. Drinking really well now, we also like this wine with some age when it becomes really soft and supple. Just starting to move into the secondary phase, with some tertiary characters and more complexity.

Magpie Estate 'The Sack' Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015

Australia

This year the Sack comes from 3 different vineyards and contains around 15% Eden Valley Shiraz. As ever aged in a mixture of American and French oak both 300 litre and 475 litre barrels, around 30% new oak this year, the balance in mostly 1 year old barrels but also some older oak. 3% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend.
2013 was a good year. although small in volume. The wine has lovely black cherry, ripe plum, hints of cassis with spice on the nose, some creamy oak and a hint of chocolate.
Juicy and opulent on the palate- black cherry, plum and blackcurrant with some hints of red berry fruit too, subtle notes of liquorice and black pepper with some creamy oak. Tannins are ripe. It's a medium bodied style of Sack which is drinking well now and over the next 5-7 years.
