Peter Lehmann Wines Stonewell and Mentor 2005 New Releases. Barossa Valley, Australia

2005 was a great vintage in the Barossa, with a long cool Summer meaning wines could be picked fully ripe and with good natural acidity. Peter Lehmann are making some outstanding wines at present and these two new releases typify this. Last year I was lucky to go to a Stonewell 20th anniversary tasting, the 2005 was the wine of the tasting in my opinion, even edging the fabulous 2004.

Peter Lehmann 'The Mentor' 2005

Australia

Over the years we have identified vineyards that repeatedly produce the best Cabernet wines, many planted over 60 years ago. These older, low yielding vineyards produce fruit that displays the classic lifted cassis and violet characters of great Cabernet. Mentor is fermented and matured in 100% French oak hogsheads, which integrates seamlessly with the powerful flavours and structure of the wine. .Recognising the greatness from a superb vintage, the winemakers chose this Cabernet for the 2004 Mentor, the first of this line to be released as a straight varietal. This is the best Cabernet we make each vintage and our particular dedication to Peter - the founder of Peter Lehmann Wines and ‘Champion of the Barossa’. The 2005 is an absolute triumph, similar to the 2004 in many ways. Lovely blackcurrant pastille on the nose, with cassis, herb and oak. It's a lovely fresh style with great acidity, nothing forced, no rough edges, just thrillingly pure Cabernet fruit, with ripe tannins and classy French oak. Drink 2012-2020

Peter Lehmann 'Stonewell' Shiraz 2005

Australia

"One sip and you’re hooked. It presses all the right buttons in all the right places: profound dark-fruit flavour, integrated cedary oak, lengthy, filigreed tannin, brightness of flavour and the persistence to polish off the package. Terrific. I’ve only tasted this as part of a large tasting of Stonewell Shiraz wines, but in that context it looked the goods, and then some. Rated : 96 Points; Alcohol : 14.5%; Price : $85; Closure : Screwcap; Drink : 2017 - 2028; By Campbell Mattinson; The Wine Front" "Deep crimson colour; distinctly rich black fruit and spice aromas, the palate long and sustained, with a beguiling twist of vibrant fruit on the finish. Due for release 2009. 95 points, drink to 2020, Cork, 14.5% alc; James Halliday; Australian Wine Companion" "A stylish wine, remarkably approachable at this age. Deep, blackish colour; cedary French oak shows together with lots of spice, leather and some vegetal aromas. An elegant, intense wine of fine balance and generous – almost essency – plum, cherry and blackberry fruit. Marvellous harmony. Already a pleasure to drink. Now to 2020. 95 Points. Huon Hooke, AGT Wine June 2009"

Fabulous follow up to the stunning 2004. At the 20 Years of Stonewell Tasting last year thsi was the wine of the tasting for me. From the great 2005 vintage, and screwcapped for the first time. It's a rael baby, deep in colour with a powerful nose of dense black fruits, spice and toasty oak. Classically dense on the palate too, hugely rich and concentrated, voluptuous with ripe black cherry, cassis and plum. Liquorice and meat too, with chocolate and toasty oak, it's got great acidity and is quite approachable now though will live for many years. Drink 2011-2025 !! Stunning wine and pretty good value.
