Magpie Estate 'The Tight Cluster' Sparkling

Magpie Estate 'The Tight Cluster' Sparkling Shiraz 2012

The second release of this bubbly Barossa beauty. As you pour this tasty wine into your glass, you're instantly captivated by the beautiful rich red nectar with fine spiralling bubbles. The first whiff is of lovely leathery/saddlery aromas and dark red and black berry fruit. When the delicate bubbles hit your tongue, soft cracked black pepper mingled with dark spices of cloves and star anise burst forth. Fruit driven, soft with nuances of well rounded raspberry jam - there's such a lovely blob of fruit in this wine, it's delicious! Fabulous wine with Christmas and Barbecued food -served hot or cold.

Magpie Estate 'The Salvation' Gewurztraminer (was £13.25) 2016

Australia

The first release since 2013 and the first with fruit from the cool Adelaide Hills which we are really delighted with. Stylistically similar to previous releases, but just better! Better fruit, more weight and varietal definition. Really floral, perfumed nose, lychee along with mango, peach, elderflower, quite grapey with just a hint of spice. Stainless steel fermented, partial wild yeast, and just off-dry with about 7 grams per litre residual sugar. Dry and tangy on the palate with lychee, musk, grapey flavours, some stone fruit and citrus too. Lots of spice and a clean dry finish. Great food wine- think Thai dishes, great with ginger and chilli, could cope with lots of Asian dishes in fact.

Magpie Estate 'Rag & Bone' Riesling 2018

Australia

2018 was a terrific year for Eden Valley Riesling. This is pretty dry. Lovely perfumed nose with lime, red apple, hints of pineapple, quite floral. Tangy and off-dry with lovely fruit and good acidity. Lime and red apple with an appealing grapey character. Clean and crisp, has a lovely focussed finish. Would be good with Asian cuisine.

Magpie Estate 'The Selfie Stick' Dry Muscat 2017

Australia

Rolf's sister Christa makes the white wines. Whilst over blending in 2016 I tasted a barrel of wine that was part of a blend for a client. It was a dry Muscat that blew me away, I loved it's vivacity and grapey freshness. So much so that I contacted the grower and immediately put an order in for 4-5 tonnes of grapes from the next vintage, and here is the result! The Muscat grapes come from the famous Terra Ricca Farms in the Riverland, known for their quality fruit. 100% Muscat partly fermented and aged in tank. Partly in old oak. We blended the two together. This is classic, dry, aromatic Muscat. Floral, grapey, white peach, jasmine and honeysuckle on an evocative nose. Crisp, and fresh, bursting with grapey characters, ripe pear and lime zest on the finish, just a hint of spice. Very refreshing and sure to go well with lightly spiced Asian and Asian influenced dishes.

'The Scoundrel' by Magpie Estate Grenache-Mataro-Shiraz 2015

Australia

This is a new range for Magpie Estate. It's 66% Grenache, 22% Mataro (Mourvedre), 12% Shiraz. The Grenache was all unoaked, and the Mataro and Shiraz just saw a little oak. It's a juicy, medium-bodied style. Lots of berry fruit, white pepper and spice. easy drinking but with more than enough character to partner food, especially game, casseroles, slow cooked meats, roasted vegetables.

Magpie Estate 'The Fixed Gear' Grenache 2016

Australia

We are experimenting at Magpie Estate ! This is our take on a 'natural' wine. Effectively other than a small touch of sulphur at bottling we have done little other than let this ferment naturally, rack it once after malolactic fermentation, and then again before bottling. Nothing added, just a very coarse (as in gentle) filtration. It's officially low sulphur at just 26mg/l. Wines with less than 50mg/l are generally regarded as low sulphur and in fact many of the Magpie wines fit this criteria. Grapes harvested from 3 vineyards in the Barossa, mostly in the Western Ridge and Gomersal sub-regions. All co-fermented, around 30% of the grapes were whole bunch, all wild (natural) yeast fermentation. 90% fermented in tank, 10% in old barrels. It's a beautifully pure, almost floral expression of Grenache. Lovely served cool. Red berries, flowers, white pepper and other spices on the crunchy. Crunchy raspberry, cherry and sarsaparilla on the palate, pepper spice, a hint of dried herb with a lovely vibrant crunchy character. Best enjoyed whilst youthful - also a versatile food wine.

Magpie Estate 'SF2' Mourvedre Grenache 2016

Australia

We are experimenting at Magpie Estate ! This is our take on a 'natural' wine. Effectively other than the merest touch of sulphur at bottling and I mean the merest we have done nothing other than let this ferment naturally, rack it once after malolactic fermentation, and then again before bottling. Nothing added, no fining or filtration. I wanted this to be a kind of rustic, honest red and have bottled it in a green sparkling wine bottle with a crown cork... It's officially low sulphur at just 13mg/l. Wines with less than 60mg/l are generally regarded as low sulphur and in fact many of the Magpie wines fit this criteria. Grapes harvested from 3 vineyards in the Barossa, mostly in the Western Ridge sub-region. Partial whole bunch- about 35%, and all wild (natural) yeast fermentation. Fermented in tank SF2 (small fermenter 2! hence the name) and then in old oak. Bottled unfiltered, no additions whatsoever. c65% Mourvedre, 35% Grenache. Lovely deep, bright colour leads to a really perfumed nose. Bright with red and black berry and cherry fruit, spice, white pepper, a touch of clove. Similar on the palate, quite weighty with rich fruit, crunchy and bright, a touch of damson along with black raspberry and cherry, lots of spice and soft tannins. It's a big juicy mouthful, unadulterated and fresh. Drink young.

Magpie Estate 'The Fakir'

Magpie Estate 'The Fakir' Grenache 2012

Australia

The latest Fakir! This all comes from the Neldner vineyards in Gomersal, in this vintage nothing really stood out to bottle a Gomersal so all the grapes have gone into the Fakir, including declassified Gomersal. As ever a combination of old and newer oak, using hogshead and larger puncheons Lovely spice- nutmeg, clove, cinnamon on the nose, berry fruits and seasoned French oak. Bright and juicy on the palate, the fruit has a lovely crunchy juicy feel, lots of spice and some integrated creamy oak that gives the wine length and texture, whilst still allowing the fruit to sing. Delicious now and over the next 5 years, again very food versatile - works well with spicy foods as well as more typical richer dishes.

Magpie Estate 'The Black Sock'

Magpie Estate 'The Black Sock' Mourvedre 2015

Australia

Good vintage for Mourvedre/Mataro. Coming from 2 vineyards - the majority from Schiller who is producing some quality fruit. Aged in larger puncheons, all second fill American and French. A higher than normal 10% Shiraz blended in to give more complexity, weight and structure. Lovely warm spicy nose. Mulling spices, plum, black cherry and a touch of oak. Medium to full bodied, classic Mourvedre savoury, almost meaty character with lots of lovely black fruits, hints of clove and pepper, oak in the background giving the wine extra depth and a gently creamy character, good acidity keeps it fresh and lively. Magpie Estate 'The Call Bag' 20th Anniversary Mourvedre Grenache 2013

Australia

1993 was the first release of this wine. 20 years later and we made a special small, just 2 barrel release to honour this. Coming primarily from our Clovella vineyard which is Mourvedre dominant, we blended in a small amount of Mourvedre and Grenache from 2 other vineyards, aged in 2 year old French oak puncheons. Classic Magpie and classic Mourvedre nose, clove, cinnamon, meaty notes, black cherry, Asian spices too. Lovely intense sweet black fruits, loads of spice, again quite meaty pan reduction flavours with black cherry, cinnamon and clove with pepper and oak on the finish. Good acidity keeps it fresh. Lovely now and sure to age over the next 3-5 years at least. The last release under this label.

Australia

This year the Sack comes from 3 different vineyards and contains around 10% Eden Valley Shiraz. As ever aged in a mixture of American and French oak both 300 litre and 475 litre barrels, around 30% new oak this year, the balance in mostly 1 year old barrels but also some older oak. in the blend. 2016 was a really good vintage. . The wine has lovely black cherry, ripe plum, hints of cassis with spice on the nose, some creamy oak and a hint of chocolate. Juicy and opulent on the palate- black cherry, plum and blackcurrant with some hints of red berry fruit too, subtle notes of liquorice and black pepper with some creamy oak. Tannins are ripe. It's a medium bodied style of Sack which is drinking well now and over the next 5-7 years.
